ExpressVPN/Aircove FlashRouter Internet Setup and Activation

Follow this article when you receive your new ExpressVPN FlashRouter to connect your FlashRouter to the Internet via ExpressVPN and customize your network so it is ready to use.

Obtain your ExpressVPN Activation Code

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit ExpressVPN’s website login page.

2. Copy your ExpressVPN Activation code and paste it into a document or leave this page open while you proceed with the instructions.

Access Router Settings

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

The wireless network will appear as “Aircove”, “Linksys##”, “Netgear##”, or “Asus” and the password to join the network will be the default wireless password printed on the bottom of the router.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Click Get Started on the ExpressVPN page that is displayed.

4a. If your FlashRouter is wired to the Internet correctly then you will be prompted to enter your ExpressVPN Activation Code found in your ExpressVPN account. Paste that in and click Sign in to ExpressVPN.

4b. If your FlashRouter is not wired correctly or is not receiving Internet properly make sure you are wired as detailed in the diagram that appears. If you are stuck at this screen we recommend powering off your ISP modem and any other router that the ExpressVPN FlashRouter is wired to and then powering them back up one by one.

Proceed with step “4a” above once the router is receiving Internet and you are prompted to enter the Activation Code.

5. Select if you want to share anonymous crash report data with ExpressVPN to help them improve the firmware for future releases.

6. Set the WiFi name and password your wireless devices will use to connect to the FlashRouter’s network. Make sure the WiFi name is unique and not a duplicate of an existing WiFi name if you change it. You can also leave it as the default information if you like. Click Continue.

7. Enter the admin password you will use to access the ExpressVPN router settings. Be sure to TYPE CAREFULLY when setting the admin password as a typo will result in needing to reset the router again. Note this password in a secure location or commit it to memory.

8. Your ExpressVPN FlashRouter is now fully setup!

PPPoE Internet Setup

Most ISPs do not require PPPoE credentials. If you are certain this is an ISP requirement in your setup, we kindly ask that you get in touch with your ISP to verify that they do in fact require PPPoE authentication and to provide you with the correct credentials to enter into your FlashRouter.

Before you enter your PPPoE credentials, you should have already setup your FlashRouter in a Single Router Setup with correct wiring. Once you enter PPPoE credentials you should then be able to connect to the internet.

If you are using a Dual Router Setup there is no need to enter PPPoE credentials if they are already entered in the existing router. You can disregard this article.

Enter your PPPoE credentials

DD-WRT Firmware

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Settings - Enter PPPOE Username and Password

Set the Connection Type dropdown to PPPoE.
Enter your ISP assigned PPPoE username and password.
Click Apply Settings.

Power cycle your network devices

Power off your ISP modem and the FlashRouter.
Power on the ISP modem and wait for it to fully boot up.
Power on the FlashRouter.

Verify a successful Internet connection

Once the FlashRouter is booted up connect one of your devices to the FlashRouter via Ethernet or Wireless.

Visit any website and make sure the page fully loads. Once you have verified a successful Internet connection, begin connecting your network devices to the FlashRouter via wired or WiFi.

Please be aware that our support is not able to replicate PPPoE issues on our end, which makes them challenging to troubleshoot. In the event of an issue we recommend using a Dual Router Setup.

Parental Controls on Roqos

The Roqos Core includes a suite of user access settings which can be used as Parental Controls.
You can create individual user profiles and assign specific devices. Using these profiles you can restrict access, block certain content, or even monitor internet usage if you choose to do so.

Create User Profiles

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS.
Select the ADD USER button at the top of the menu.
Create a name to identify the user. You may also add a photo or picture to associate with this user however this is optional.
Select the SAVE button at the bottom of the menu.

Assign Devices

Once you have created a user, you must assign one or more devices to the user.
Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.

Select DEVICES.
Select ADD DEVICE.

The ADD DEVICES menu lists all devices which are currently or previously connected to the Roqos. You cannot assign a device to a user unless it has been connected to the Roqos.
Use the check box to select one or more devices and then select the SAVE button to assign the device to the user.

A device can only be assigned to one user. Access restrictions you place on a user such as scheduled internet access or content restriction will apply to all devices assigned to that user regardless of who in your home is actually using the device at that time.

Turn Off Internet Access

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu
Use the PAUSE button next to the user’s name to halt all internet access to the devices assigned to this user. Conversely, you can restore internet access by pushing the PLAY button here as well.

Schedule Internet Access

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
Select SCHEDULE PAUSES. You can create multiple schedules for each user to pause their internet access on a daily recurring basis for every day of the week.

Enable Content Filters

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
Select FILTER. Use existing category and content filters provided by Roqos and customize with your own blocked and allowed site lists.
Select SAVE.

Monitor Internet Usage

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
Select USAGE HISTORY. Access usage data for all devices assigned to this user. This includes websites visited and activity times.

Please note that in order to collect device information, you must enable this functionality on your Roqos. It is disabled by default.

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select ADVANCED SETTINGS.
Select MISCELLANEOUS.
Activate the COLLECT USER INTERNET USAGE and COLLECT DEVICE DATA USAGE options.

NordVPN Merlin OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Merlin Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

1. There are two options for obtaining the .ovpn file. The first and recommended is to navigate to NordVPN’s server recommendation page. Click Recommended Server to display the fastest server based on your actual location. You can adjust the country if you don’t want to connect to the recommended country.

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

The second method to obtain a server is for connecting to a specific server number that you know you want to use. This applies to NordVPN Dedicated IP servers if you are signed up for that service. Go to NordVPN’s .ovpn file page. Then search for the server number that you want to use and click Download UDP.

Merlin Router Setup for NordVPN

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here. Our example server was in us5835.nordvpn.com so I have entered in NordVPN us5835.

6. Set Accept DNS Configuration to Strict. Set Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel to Yes (all). Set Kill Switch to Yes or No depending on if you want the Internet to be killed if the VPN connection drops.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the OpenVPN Client profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network please set the Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel to VPN Director. Then complete the instructions on this page and then view our VPN Director guide.

7. Enter your NordVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your NordVPN email login and password.

8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

In some cases you may notice that the location is not showing the same location as the server you have input in your router settings; this is because geo tracking tools are often tricked by VPN connections. As long as you see an IP address that is not the same as your normal Internet IP address then you are indeed connected to NordVPN.

How to change the NordVPN server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

Privacy Hero Activation and Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Privacy Hero router to create your Privacy Hero account, connect your Privacy Hero to the Internet, and customize your network so it is ready to use.

Your Privacy Hero router uses Cloud Based router management which means you can access the router settings from anywhere on any device that has an internet connection. You can follow these steps while connected to your phone or your other Wi-Fi network.

Create your Privacy Hero account

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Select Create Account.

3. Enter the Email address you want to set for your Privacy Hero account. This will be your login to the Privacy Hero settings moving forward. Click Create Account.

4. Go to your Email inbox and check for an email from Privacy Hero and click the Confirm email address link. This email may be in your Promotions or Spam inbox if it is not appearing in your main inbox.

5. Enter the password that you want to use for your Privacy Hero account. Be sure to note this in a secure location so you do not forget. Click Submit.

6. You have now created your Privacy Hero account. You will use this login to access the Privacy Hero router settings.

Activate your Privacy Hero Internet and setup Wi-Fi

1. You will then be taken to the Router Activation steps. Connect the ethernet cable that the Privacy Hero came with from an open Ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN/Internet (blue) port of the Privacy Hero.

Then power the Privacy Hero device on by connecting the power supply. This is shown in the video on the page as well. Wait about a minute or so for the Privacy Hero router to fully boot up and then click I’m Connected.

2. The next page may say Router Found or ask you to enter the Activation Code. If it asks for the Activation Code that will be the code printed on the bottom of the Privacy Hero. Enter this code and click Next.

3. Set the Wi-Fi name and password for connecting your devices to the Privacy Hero network. Make sure it is not a duplicate name of an existing Wi-Fi network. Click Next.

4. To activate your 1 Year NordVPN code:

Click on Claim NordVPN 1 Year Code Now

Go to the Account section of your router settings.

Copy the NordVPN code shown under Claim NordVPN 1 Year Code.

Go to the NordVPN activation page.

This code can be used with a new or existing NordVPN account.

5. You are now all set to begin joining your devices to the new Privacy Hero network with the Wi-Fi name and password you entered and setting up some of the Privacy Hero features.

NordVPN Setup for GL.iNet Routers

You can connect to NordVPN on your GL.iNet router using NordLynx, OpenVPN, or a Dedicated IP.

Quick Options

NordLynx: Choose your preferred city or country from NordVPN’s server list
OpenVPN: Choose your preferred city or country from NordVPN’s server list.
Dedicated IP (optional): Enter your unique configuration file if you’ve been assigned a static NordVPN IP.

NordVPN NordLynx Setup for GLiNet

1. Get your NordVPN Access Token for NordLynx connections. Log in to your NordVPN account and select NordVPN from your list of Services.

2. At the bottom of the page click Get Access token and you will receive a code via email. Enter this code to proceed.

3. After you enter the email code select Generate new token and set it to Doesn’t expire. Copy this token.

4. Login to GL.iNet firmware settings (usually 192.168.8.1) in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network.

5. Navigate to the VPN tab and select Wireguard Client then choose NordVPN. Enter your Token then click Save and Continue

6. Select your preferred server locations, and click Apply.

7. Start a connection by clicking the 3 dots (…) > Start next to your chosen server.

8. A green dot confirms success. You can also switch between Global Mode or Policy Mode for routing in the VPN Dashboard.

NordVPN OpenVPN Setup for GLiNet

1. Get your NordVPN manual service credentials for OpenVPN connections. Log in to your NordVPN account and select NordVPN from your list of Services.

2. At the bottom of the page in the Manual Setup section click Setup NordVPN manually then under the Configuration section go to Service credentials. Click Verify email to receive a code via email and enter the code to view and copy your credentials.

3. Login to GL.iNet firmware settings (usually 192.168.8.1) in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network.

4. Navigate to the VPN tab and select OpenVPN Client.

5. Select the NordVPN group, enter your manual credentials, then click Save Credentials & Get Servers.

6. Choose UDP (recommended), select your preferred server locations, and click Apply.

7. Start a connection by clicking the 3 dots (…) > Start next to your chosen server.

8. A green dot confirms success. You can also switch between Global Mode or Policy Mode for routing in the VPN Dashboard.

NordVPN Dedicated IP Setup for GLiNet

1. Get your NordVPN manual service credentials for OpenVPN connections. Log in to your NordVPN account and select NordVPN from your list of Services.

3. Login to GL.iNet firmware settings (usually 192.168.8.1) in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network.

4. Navigate to the VPN tab and select OpenVPN Client.

5. Download your Dedicated IP configuration file from the NordVPN website.

6. Click +New Group and name your NordVPN Dedicated IP connection, then upload the configuration file, enter your manual service credentials and click Apply.

7. Start a connection by clicking the 3 dots (…) > Start next to your chosen server.

8. A green dot confirms success. You can also switch between Global Mode or Policy Mode for routing in the VPN Dashboard.

You should now see information appear in the Server Address, Server Listen Port, Traffic Statistics, and Client Virtual IP areas.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

🚫📱Do not run NordVPN apps on devices connected to your NordVPN router. Using the app at the same time as the router VPN may cause conflicts and connection issues.

Cudy Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Cudy FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port if you purchased a Cudy AX3000 or to ethernet port #1 of the device marked Primary if you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the Cudy router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

The FlashRouter WiFi password is printed on the sheet that came with the router and is set to Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router if you cannot locate the sheet. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.10.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the Cudy firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Cudy FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

7. If you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000 mesh package you can now take the unit labeled Node to the location you want it connecting from and power it up. It will connect to the Primary network that was just setup automatically. You will then see the Mesh Units number increase according to the number that you have purchased shortly.

My 5.0GHz network is not showing up

Verify the device supports 5GHz

5.0GHz networks are not compatible with all devices so first make sure that you device’s wireless adapter supports 5GHz wireless frequencies.

If you are not sure, find out if your device support 5 GHz via Google search or by looking in the wireless hardware details in the device’s network settings. If you see Wireless a/b/g/n support then you have a compatible device. If you are missing the Wireless a then this means there is no 5 GHz support.

Enter the recommended wireless settings

Our team has tested the wireless functionality for each FlashRouter that we offer and shared our recommended wireless settings in our Wifi Setup area. Replicate the settings for your FlashRouter model found on that page.

Lower the wireless channel

Some devices do support 5.0GHz connections but not the higher channels that DD-WRT firmware offers.

Navigate to Wireless > Basic Settings

Lower the wireless channel setting for the 5.0GHz band that is not showing. Based on our tests the most broadly compatible channels are 36, 48 and 161.

CLICK APPLY SETTINGS

Refresh your device's network adapter

The easiest way to accomplish this is by rebooting your device as the settings to reset your adapter may vary on all types of internet connected devices.

Can My Router Be Preconfigured With My VPN Information?

Plug and Play VPN Support

Yes you can!

To receive a plug and play with VPN device, you will need to provide our team with the credentials from your VPN provider subscription.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not required but recommended for users who wish to have the simplest, most seamless experience when the FlashRouter arrives. You can always change the password when the device arrives if you wish as well.

To have your router VPN preconfigured:

Check the “Connect To VPN For Me” box under VPN – Preconfiguration on the Product Page during check out.
Select your VPN provider. If you don’t see your VPN listed select “Other” and you will see an additional field to input who your provider is.
You’ll receive an email after purchase with detailed instructions. If you have any questions our team is happy to help!

Please note: If you do give a server location, we will automatically start the device with the closest/optimal server for the location we are shipping the device by default. A location has to be added to the initial configuration for plug and play encryption security to occur on the device.

Privacy Hero 2 Only:

While our team isn’t able to pre-configure the Privacy Hero 2 VPN Router before shipping it out since you’ll have to make a Privacy Hero user account and register your router, we can assist you with the VPN set up process once you receive the router and create your Privacy Hero user account via 1-on-1 remote session, email, or live chat on our site.

Can I Use My Dedicated IP Address With A FlashRouter?

Dedicated IP Addresses from NordVPN, SurfShark, & TorGuard are supported on almost all of our FlashRouter options.

Can I Use A FlashRouter With My Current Mesh System?

Yes!

You will be able to connect the FlashRouter of your choosing to your current mesh router via ethernet port as shown below:

ISP Modem/Router —- FlashRouter (VPN) —- Main Mesh Router (VPN from FlashRouter)

This setup will allow you to keep your mesh network with added VPN protection, as well as add the FlashRouter wireless network for your devices.

You can disable the wifi on the FlashRouter also if you only wanted to use the mesh network for wifi.

At FlashRouters, we offer expert router flashing and VPN configuration services through our Flash My Router plans. Will a FlashRouter Work With My Internet Service Provider?

US Customers (Single Router Solution):

Almost all Internet Service Providers(ISPs) require a modem in place to establish a connection to their service, however a modem by itself doesn’t provide the wifi connectivity needed in the home or office. A FlashRouter can connect directly to all known modems provided by major ISPs to create a wireless network so long as there is an Ethernet port on the modem to connect to the FlashRouter Internet port.

US Customers (Dual Router Solution):

Yes, FlashRouters are compatible with your ISP in what is called a Dual Router Set Up.

For this type of setup, you would use your current router or modem router to connect to your local ISP while using a FlashRouter to connect to your VPN. This is recommended as you will not overhaul your network with a new router, and you will be able to use your selected VPN service on the devices you wish to use it with.

This set up would result in the creation of two networks, which can be seen as the “Local Network” and the “FlashRouter Network”. All devices connected to the FlashRouter Network will go through the VPN service.

For any device you would prefer to use without a VPN, you can connect to the local network. The chain of devices would be connected from LAN ton your modem or modem/router to WAN on the FlashRouter, with your current router connected to the FlashRouter via Ethernet cable.

What Stock Firmware Features Will I Lose If I Flash My Router

Open Source firmware like DD-WRT or Assu Merlin has many features equivalent to what stock firmware has, in addition to adding new features to a router. However, some features are lost from the stock firmware when a router is flashed.

These are typically features that are put into the stock firmware by the manufacturers themselves. Things like the Linksys App and the NetGear Genie are examples of what would not be available or compatible on the router after flashing.

Most routers also have a WPS button. By default, the WPS button’s functionality is disabled when a router is flashed as it can be vulnerable and a security risk. It can be re-enabled by following this guide but we do not recommend it.

Does a FlashRouter or Service Plan Purchase Include a VPN Subscription?

A subscription to a VPN does not come with a FlashRouter or Service plan. If you are planning to use a VPN, you would need to sign up for one separately, directly from a provider.

To receive a plug and play with VPN device, you will need to provide our team with the credentials from your VPN provider subscription.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not required but recommended for users who wish to have the simplest, most seamless experience when the FlashRouter arrives. You can always change the password when the device arrives if you wish as well.

To have your router VPN pre-configured:

Select Yes from the “Want Your Router Preconfigured?” on the Payment Page during checkout.
Select your VPN provider. If you don’t see your VPN listed select “Other” and you will see an additional field to input who your provider is.

For ExpressVPN Firmware Routers there will be an additional box for your activation code.

Please note: If you do not enter a server location request in “Order Comments”, we will automatically start the device with the closest/optimal server for the location we are shipping the device by default. A location has to be added to the initial configuration for plug and play encryption security to occur on the device.

Using two VPNs at once can lead to unpredictable results. Bouncing your network traffic to multiple servers before finally arriving at it’s intended destination can sometimes introduce speed and connection issues.

Please consider that some employers and agencies are more vigilant regarding third party VPN use than others. There are tools readily available that detect the use of VPN services.

While these tools cannot decrypt and view your network traffic, they can tell your employer that you are potentially using a VPN, which can be against company policy.

If your corporate and personal VPN do not work together, then you can always set the computer using your work VPN to bypass the FlashRouter’s VPN tunnel by accessing the router admin panel for your device.

This way, your computer would only use the work VPN. Keep in mind however, your location would appear as your actual location to your work.

PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) Merlin OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for PIA Merlin Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

Merlin Router Setup for PIA

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location here. Our example server was in US East Streaming so I have entered in PIA US East Streaming.

7. Enter your PIA account username and password.

8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful PIA connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit PIA’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the PIA server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

1. Log in to your account on the IPVanish website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to IPVanish .ovpn file page.

3. Click on the .ovpn file for the server location you want to use to dowloand the .ovpn file. Do not open this file.

Merlin Router Setup for IPVanish

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

Wireless Client Bridge Setup

If you need to extend your wired connection capabilities and you are not able to wire directly into your main router, you can setup a FlashRouter as a Wireless Client Bridge. In Wireless Client Bridge mode the FlashRouter connects to your main router via WiFi, and then transmits your internet signal via the FlashRouter LAN ports for wired internet access anywhere in your home or office.

Preparing for Wireless Client Bridge Setup

Verify your wireless information

In order to setup your FlashRouter as a Wireless Client Bridge, you will need the exact SSID and password of your existing wireless network. Make sure you have this information before proceeding.

We recommend using a 2.4GHz network to repeat as this network will have more range.

Locate the Local IP Address of the existing wireless network

Locate the Local IP Address of the existing router that the FlashRouter will be bridged to.

DD-WRT Router Setup for Wireless Client Bridge

Disable Firewall

Navigate to Security > Firewall

Set SPI Firewall to Disable.
Uncheck all boxes except for Filter Multicast.
Click Save.

Disable DNSmasq

Navigate to Services > Services

Set DNSmasq to Disable.
Click Save.

Enter Wireless settings

Navigate to Wireless > Basic Settings

Wireless Client Bridge Setup on FlashRouter DD-WRT - Set Wireless Mode to Client Bridge

In the Wireless Physical Interface settings for the 2.4GHz network set the Wireless Mode to Client Bridge.
Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to match exactly with the Wireless Network Name of the network that you will bridge to.
Click Save.

Enter Wireless Security settings

Navigate to Wireless > Wireless Security

Wireless Client Bridge Setup on FlashRouter DD-WRT - Set Wireless Password

Change the WPA Shared Key to match exactly with the Wireless Password of the network that you will bridge to.
Click Save.

Change the FlashRouter's Local IP Address

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Set the Local IP Address to a different address on the same subnet as the existing network that you noted early. (example: if the existing network is 192.168.1.1 then set the Local IP Address to 192.168.1.2)
Set the Gateway to the Local IP Address of the existing network. (example: 192.168.1.1)
Set the Local DNS to the Local IP Address of the existing network. (example: 192.168.1.1)
Click Apply Settings.

Reboot your FlashRouter

Power off the FlashRouter for 30 seconds and then power it back on. When it boots back up you will be able to access the FlashRouter’s settings at the new Local IP Address that you set. Your existing network and the FlashRouter’s network will now be bridged wirelessly.

Your FlashRouter is now providing wired connection access to your main router network. Wireless connections to the FlashRouter are disabled in this setup.

Back up your settings

Navigate to Administration > Backup

Click the Backup button.
A file named nvrambak.bin will be saved to your computer.
You can load nvrambak.bin to restore your settings in the event of a reset.

Preparing for Manual Hotspot Shield Setup

Obtain your Hotspot Shield OpenVPN Information

If you are not already a Hotspot Shield user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the Hotspot Shield website.

2. Click Hotspot Shield on the left side navigation.

3. Under Choose your device click Router.

4. In the Set up your router section Select your desired virtual location and then click Download file.

Open the file that was downloaded with NotePad++ for Windows or TextEdit for Apple. You only need the <cert> and <key> from the .ovpn file. All Hotspot Shield servers have different keys and certificates.

Why is my router not connecting to internet?

Router not connecting to the internet? Follow these simple steps!

Make sure that you are not setting a WAN IP of 0.0.0.0 in the top right corner of your FlashRouter DD-WRT settings. If you do, then make sure your FlashRouter is wired correctly for Internet.
Try power cycling your ISP modem, FlashRouter and any other router that may be in the setup. Power the modem back on first, wait for it to boot up fully, and then power the FlashRouter back on.
Make sure you do not have Global Kill Switch enabled in the FlashRouters Privacy App and if you do make sure your VPN status is Connected.

TP-Link Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new TP-Link FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port of the TP-Link.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the TP-Link router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to tplinkwifi.net

5. Enter tp-link as the admin password to access the TP-Link firmware settings.

6. Verify that your TP-Link FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

How do I reset and reconfigure my ExpressVPN/Aircove FlashRouter?

When is a router reset needed?

A reset of the FlashRouter should only be performed in the following instances:

You have exhausted all other troubleshooting methods and cannot access your router settings.
Password to access the FlashRouter’s settings are not working.
Power light on the router is blinking steadily.
Router is not accessible after upgrading the firmware

Reset Router

Asus FlashRouters:

While the router is powered off press and hold the WPS button on the back or side of the router. Power up the router while continuing to hold the WPS. Continue to hold for 15 seconds as the router powers on (note this could be up to 45 seconds on some models before lights flash).
You will see the lights on the router flashing steadily and this is how you know you have reset the router.
Let the router sit for about a minute and then reboot the router.

Aircove, Linksys and Netgear FlashRouters:

While the router is plugged in, find the reset button located on the back of the router. You will need a pin or pencil to hold down the button for 15 seconds.
You will see the lights on the back of the router flash simultaneously and this is how you know you have reset the router.
Let the router sit for about a minute and then reboot the router.

Access Router Settings

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Click Get Started on the ExpressVPN page that is displayed.

Proceed with step “4a” above once the router is receiving Internet and you are prompted to enter the Activation Code.

5. Select if you want to share anonymous crash report data with ExpressVPN to help them improve the firmware for future releases.

8. Your ExpressVPN FlashRouter is now fully setup!

Obtain your ExpressVPN OpenVPN Information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the ExpressVPN website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

4. Click the Server Location that you want to connect to. This will download a .ovpn file to your computer that we will use later on. There is no need to open the file. For this example I have selected New York but feel free to select any server listed there.

Merlin Router Setup for ExpressVPN

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here. Our example server was in New York so I have entered in ExpressVPN New York.

7. Enter your ExpressVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your ExpressVPN email login and password.

8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

You can connect to ProtonVPN on your GL.iNet router using Wireguard or OpenVPN.

Quick Options

Wireguard: Download your preferred server .conf configuration file from the ProtonVPN website.
OpenVPN: Download your preferred server .ovpn configuration file from the ProtonVPN website.

ProtonVPN Wireguard Setup for GLiNet (Recommended)

1. Login to your ProtonVPN account and go to the Downloads section of your ProtonVPN account page

2. Scroll down to find the WireGuard configuration section. Name your configuration and then select Router as the platform, and select Standard server configs.

3. Click Create button to choose the recommended server or scroll down to choose and Download any of the available server files from the list.

4. Login to GL.iNet firmware settings (usually 192.168.8.1) in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network.

5. Navigate to the VPN tab and select WireGuard Client then click + New Group and name your connection and click the check to save.

6. Upload the configuration file and click Apply.

7. Start a connection by clicking the 3 dots (…) > Start next to your chosen server.

8. A green dot confirms success. You can also switch between Global Mode or Policy Mode for routing in the VPN Dashboard.

3. Scroll down to find the OpenVPN configuration Files. Select Router as the platform, UDP as the protocol, and select Standard server configs. Choose your preferred country and download the configuration file.

4. Login to GL.iNet firmware settings (usually 192.168.8.1) in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network.

5. Navigate to the VPN tab and select OpenVPN Client.

6. Select Add Manually then click + New Group and name your connection and click the check to save.

7. Upload the configuration file and input your username and password, click Apply.

8. Start a connection by clicking the 3 dots (…) > Start next to your chosen server.

9. A green dot confirms success. You can also switch between Global Mode or Policy Mode for routing in the VPN Dashboard.

You should now see information appear in the Server Address, Server Listen Port, Traffic Statistics, and Client Virtual IP areas.
Visit ProtonVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

🚫📱Do not run ProtonVPN apps on devices connected to your ProtonVPN router. Using the app at the same time as the router VPN may cause conflicts and connection issues.

Your Roqos Core’s settings or UI (User Interface) is accessible via a secure cloud based connection rather than the typical local access of other routers. This means that you can manage your Roqos from anywhere in the world not just at home.

Visit the Roqos Login URL

From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit login.roqos.com

Login with your Roqos account

Enter in the email and password that you set when your Roqos was initially setup. If you still need to create your Roqos account and activate your Roqos follow our Activate and Connect Roqos to Internet guide.

Proceed with making the changes to the settings you desire

NordVPN Cudy OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Cudy Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

Cudy Router Setup for NordVPN

Login to Cudy firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Cudy FlashRouter’s network.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

4. Select OpenVPN Client from the Protocol dropdown.

5. Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. You should see the server file name listed next to Current Config File after doing so.

6. Enter your NordVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your NordVPN email login and password.

7. Click Save & Apply at the bottom of the page.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the NordVPN server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

Privacy Hero VPN Setup Guide for Privacy Hero

Use these steps to connect to Privacy Hero’s own WireGuard VPN servers. You will automatically be connected to the ideal USA or Canada server based on your location.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

If you have not created your Privacy Hero account yet please follow these instructions.

3. Click the VPN symbol.

4. Set the VPN toggle to On.

5. Connect to the Privacy Hero’s via wireless or ethernet connection on your device and visit What is my IP Address from a private/incognito browser to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Privacy Hero’s cloud based router settings access makes it so you can change settings while not connected to the Privacy Hero network so if your IP Address has not changed be sure to double check that you are indeed connected to the Privacy Hero network on the device you are checking your IP from.

Keep in mind that the VPN connection will not change the location of the streaming services listed in the Streaming Relocation area of the Privacy Hero settings.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Flint or Slate GL.iNet router to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port of the Flint or Slate GL.iNet router.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the GL.iNet firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Flint/Slate GL.iNet router is receiving a WAN IP Address and webpages are loading while connected to its network.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet Repeater Setup

If you want to connect your FlashRouter to the Internet via Wi-Fi instead of an ethernet cable you can setup a FlashRouter as a Wireless Repeater. In Wireless Repeater mode the FlashRouter connects to an available network via WiFi and then creates a completely separate network segment for you.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

3. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the GL.iNet firmware settings.

4. Select the Internet tab.

5. In the Repeater area select Connect.

6. Select the available Wi-Fi network you want the FlashRouter to use for Internet from the list. You can use a 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz network to connect.

7. Enter the correct Wi-Fi password in the Password field for the network you selected. Then click Apply.

8. You are now setup with the GL.iNet FlashRouter receiving Internet via Wi-Fi. The Repeater area should now be filled in with the network information of the connection as shown below.

Surfshark AsusWRT WireGuard Setup

Preparing for Surfshark AsusWRT Setup

Copy your Surfshark Private Key

If you are not already a Surfshark user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the Surfshark website.

2. Click VPN Manual Setup.

3. Select Router as the Setup method.

4. Select WireGuard as the Protocol.

5. Select I don’t have a key pair.

6. Enter FlashRouter as the name of the connection and click Next.

7. Click Generate a new key pair.

8. A Public Key and Private Key will then appear. Use the copy box to copy the Private Key. You will not need the public key.

AsusWRT Router Setup for Surfshark

Login to AsusWRT firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the AsusWRT FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Fusion tab.

3. Click Add profile.

4. In the Connection Name field enter in Surfshark.

5. In the VPN Type dropdown select Surfshark.

6. In the Region dropdown select the Surfshark location you want to connect to.

7. In the Private Key field paste in the Surfshark Private Key obtained earlier.

8. Click Apply and Enable at the bottom of the page.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the Surfshark profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network click into the profile and disable Apply to all devices. Then click Devices and select the devices that you want to connect to VPN.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful Surfshark connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit Surfshark’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the Surfshark server

Use the profile service state toggle to disconnect the currently connected location.
Then click into the Surfshark profile in the router’s settings.
Then adjust the Region dropdown to a new location.
Click Apply all settings.
Use the profile service state toggle to connect the new location.
