Flint/Slate GL.iNet Change Wi-Fi name and password

Follow this guide to change the Wi-Fi name and password on your GL.iNet FlashRouter.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

The FlashRouter WiFi password is printed on the sheet that came with the router and is set to Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router if you cannot locate the sheet. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

3. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the GL.iNet firmware settings.

4. Click Wireless.

5. Click Modify under the 5GHz or 2.4GHz band.

The 5GHz and 2.4GHz information must be changed at separate times. Keep in mind that if you are connected to wireless when changing one band you may need to reconnect with the new info you set to be on the network again to make changes to the other band.

6. Change the Wi-Fi Name (SSID) and Wi-Fi Password fields to what you want to use. The SSID should be unique and NOT a duplicate of an existing network. Click Apply.

7. Connect your devices to the new wireless network.

Cudy Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Cudy FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port if you purchased a Cudy AX3000 or to ethernet port #1 of the device marked Primary if you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the Cudy router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.10.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the Cudy firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Cudy FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

7. If you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000 mesh package you can now take the unit labeled Node to the location you want it connecting from and power it up. It will connect to the Primary network that was just setup automatically. You will then see the Mesh Units number increase according to the number that you have purchased shortly.

TP-Link Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new TP-Link FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

ExpressVPN Setup Guide for Privacy Hero

Your Privacy Hero router uses Cloud Based router management which means you can access the router settings from anywhere on any device that has an internet connection. You can follow these steps while connected to your phone, other Wi-Fi network, or the Privacy Hero network.

Use these steps to connect to ExpressVPN OpenVPN servers. First you will need to gather your unique OpenVPN login credentials and download the correct .ovpn file from the ExpressVPN website.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

3. Click the VPN symbol.

4. Click the Change button and select Custom from the dropdown.

5. In a new tab login to your ExpressVPN account.

6. Select Manual Configuartion on the from the menu options

7. Copy and paste the username and password from the blue boxes into the Custom box on your Privacy Hero settings page.

8. Download a server file from any of the available regions shown in the ExpressVPN Manual Configuration section (Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, etc)

9. Drag and drop or click to Upload the server file into the Custom box on your Privacy Hero settings page and then you will need to add one line to the top of the configuration.

10. At the top of your OpenVPN configuration add in the following line as shown in the picture above

Now click the Save button.

11. Your Privacy Hero settings should now show a Connected message, indicating you have successfully signed in to your ExpressVPN server.

12. Connect to the Privacy Hero via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device and visit an IP checker from a private/incognito browser to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Privacy Hero’s cloud based router settings access makes it so you can change settings while not connected to the Privacy Hero network so if your IP Address has not changed be sure to double check that you are indeed connected to the Privacy Hero network on the device you are checking your IP from.

Keep in mind that the VPN connection will not change the location of the streaming services listed in the Streaming Relocation area of the Privacy Hero settings if the Streaming Relocation feature is Enabled.

StrongVPN WireGuard Setup

DD-WRT Router Setup for StrongVPN WireGuard

StrongVPN Wireguard DD-WRT setup is now officially supported by FlashRouters. Follow the steps below to gather all the required information to complete your Wireguard router setup.

Navigate to Security > Firewall

Set SPI Firewall to Disable.

Select your actual time zone for you physical location from the dropdown and enter 1.pool.ntp.org in the Server IP/Name dropdown.

Preparing for StrongVPN WireGuard Setup

Obtain your StrongVPN WireGuard Information

If you are not already a StrongVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the StrongVPN website.

2. Select Router icon as the Platform

Select Router for StrongVPN WireGuard Platform

3. Select the Advanced Options dropdown and then check Exclude LAN Traffic and set any value between 52000 and 60000 in the Custom Port field.

4. Select the Server Location from the dropdown that you would like to connect to.

5. Select the Generate at the bottom of the page.

6. Click the DD-WRT installer script box to copy.

Navigate to Administration > Commands

Paste the StrongVPN Script that was copied in the empty Commands Shell.

Delete the very last line sleep 8 && reboot.

Click Save Custom (or Save Custom Script may appear depending on your firmware build, they are the same thing)

Copy the line below and paste into the empty Commands Shell.

sh /tmp/.rc_custom

Click Run Commands.

Wait two minutes and then power the FlashRouter off and back on. Reconnect to the FlashRouter’s network when it has booted back up.

Verify a successful StrongVPN WireGuard connection

Navigate to Setup > Tunnels

You should now see that page filled in with WireGuard info.
Visit StrongVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Back up your settings

Navigate to Administration > Backup

Click the Backup button.
A file named nvrambak.bin will be saved to your computer.
You can load nvrambak.bin to restore your settings in the event of a reset.

ProtonVPN WireGuard Setup

Preparing for ProtonVPN WireGuard Setup

Verify your ProtonVPN login information

If you are not already a ProtonVPN user Sign Up Now.

Log in to your account on the ProtonVPN website.

1. On the left hand side select Downloads.

2. Then select WireGuard Configuration.

3. Enter the Device Name to assign the FlashRouter to identify it among your ProtonVPN connections.

4. Set the Device platform as Router.

5. Select the VPN Options that you would like to connect with.

6. ProtonVPN will recommend the ideal server for you to connect to based on your location. Click Create or scroll down and select the server you wish to connect to and click Create next to the server number.

7. Click Download to download the .conf file of the server you selected.

Navigate to Setup > Tunnels

Enter ProtonVPN WireGuard settings

1. Click Import Config and then select Choose file. Select the .conf file that was downloaded earlier.

2. All settings will be loaded into the DD-WRT firmware the only field that needs to be adjusted is setting Persistent Keepalive to 25.

3. Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page.

4. After 30 seconds or so refresh the page until you see the WireGuard Status on the page is populated as seen below.

Navigate to Setup > Tunnels

You should Endpoint, Latest handshake, and Transfer in the WireGuard status area.
Visit whatismyipaddress.com to verify your status as using ProtonVPN.

Back up your settings

Navigate to Administration > Backup

Wireless Repeater Setup

If you need to extend your wireless and wired connection capabilities, you can setup a FlashRouter as a Wireless Repeater. In Wireless Repeater mode the FlashRouter connects to your main router via WiFi and then creates a completely separate network segment for you. This new “repeater” network then transmits your internet signal via FlashRouter LAN ports for wired internet access while also creating a new Wireless Extender network that will expand your wireless network range throughout your home or office just like a mesh network.

Preparing for Wireless Repeater Setup

Verify your wireless information

To connect your FlashRouter wirelessly to your existing wireless network you will need the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and Wireless Password of the existing wireless network that you will repeat. Verify and note this information.

We recommend using a 2.4GHz network to repeat as this network will have more range. Be sure to click Add under the 2.4GHz settings and not the 5GHz settings.

Disable Firewall

Navigate to Security > Firewall

Click Save.

Enter Wireless settings

Navigate to Wireless > Basic Settings

Select Add in the Virtual Interface area.

In the Wireless Physical Interface settings for the 2.4GHz network set the Wireless Mode to Repeater.

FlashRouters with a Broadcom chipset will have Repeater as an option in the dropdown but FlashRouters with an Atheroes chipset will not. Select Client or Client (Routed) if Repeater is not listed for your FlashRouter.

Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to match exactly with the Wireless Network Name of the network that you will repeat.

In the Virtual Interfaces settings change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to FlashRouter24 or any other unique SSID.

Navigate to Wireless > Wireless Security

Change the WPA Shared Key to match exactly with the Wireless Password of the network that you will repeat.

Verify the Internet Connection

In the top right hand corner of the DD-WRT you should see the WAN IP change from 0.0.0.0 to an actual IP Address. Once this changes navigate to any website to test your Internet connection.

Change Wireless Channels on ExpressVPN/Aircove firmware

Changing the wireless channel on your ExpressVPN FlashRouter can help with WiFi stability and allows you to use a wireless channel with less traffic in your local environment.

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Login with your ExpressVPN FlashRouter admin password.

4. Select Network Settings on the left hand side of the menu.

5. Select Wi-Fi Settings on the left hand side of the menu.

6. Select Advanced Settings.

7. Select the Channel Width and Main Channel you want your ExpressVPN FlashRouter to use. Note that higher 5GHz Wi-Fi channels will not be compatible with older devices. Click Save. Click Continue.

DNS Setup for DD-WRT FlashRouters

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. DNS resolves website domain names (www.website.com) to IP Addresses so you don’t have to remember the IP Address of every site you visit.

We setup each FlashRouter with Google DNS (8.8.8.8 , 8.8.4.4) and/or OpenDNS (208.67.220.220 , 208.67.222.222) to prevent your ISP DNS from leaking when connected to the FlashRouter.

By using a trusted DNS server like those listed below, or from your trusted VPN service provider, you can prevent ISP’S from compiling your browsing data and selling it to third parties without your consent.

How to change the DNS on your FlashRouter

We preset each FlashRouter with GoogleDNS and OpenDNS so there is no need to change the DNS servers unless you have reset the FlashRouter or want to use different DNS servers.

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Scroll down to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP).
Enter in any combination of valid DNS servers into Statict DNS fields 1, 2, and 3.
Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page.
Power cycle your FlashRouter off and back on.

GL.iNet Access Router Settings and Firmware Upgrade

Follow this guide to upgrade the firmware of your GL.iNet FlashRouter.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

3. If a new firmware upgrade is available the router settings will either display a banner when you first access the router or a header. Click Install or the Upgrade arrow depending on which appears for you.

4. Make sure the Keep Settings toggle is pushed to the right so your router does not get reset. Click the Install button to begin the firmware upgrade.

5. The firmware update should take about 2-3 minutes. You may need to reconnect your wireless devices after the network comes back up in your available networks.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

4. Click Wireless.

5. Click 5GHz Guest Wi-Fi or 2.4GHz Guest Wi-Fi.

6. Click Modify.

7. Set the Enable Wi-Fi toggle to the ON position.

8. Change the Wi-Fi Name (SSID) and Wi-Fi Password fields to what you want to use. The SSID should be unique and NOT a duplicate of an existing network. Click Apply.

9. Connect your devices to the new guest wireless network.

Why are some of my devices not connecting to the internet?

Make sure you are not using any device VPN device application or proxy on devices that are connected to the FlashRouter’s network as this can cause a conflict. Make sure the FlashRouter’s VPN connection is the only active VPN connection in your network.
Check that static settings are not configured on your device.
Certain devices require port forwarding rules to be properly setup before full connectivity. This may apply to devices like VOIP or smart cameras. If this is the case you may need to contact the manufacturer for more specific information.
Check that the FR Privacy App feature for a device specific Kill Switch is not set for the device, and if kill switch is setup, then make sure the VPN connection is active.

What is a DNS leak and how can I prevent a DNS leak in my router?

What is a DNS leak?

A DNS Leak is an instance where your ISP receives DNS requests despite being connected to a VPN tunnel.

How do I check if my DNS is leaking?

Perform the extended test on DNSLeakTest.com. Be sure to do so on multiple web browsers for best accuracy.
Here you should only find one server and your ISP should not be listed as your actual ISP.
If your actual ISP is not listed there is no DNS leak.

How can I prevent a DNS leak in DD-WRT?

Check your device's browser settings

Updates to web browsers have added DNS settings capabilities, while this often makes your browsing experience more secure it can also effect the results of a DNS leak test. You can go into your browser’s settings and search for “DNS” and disable the DNS of the browser for more accurate DNS leak test results.

A simple web search for “DNS settings [browser name]” should return helpful information for finding the setting in your browser.

Adjust DD-WRT settings

1. On the Setup > Basic Setup page of the DD-WRT settings check the Ignore WAN DNS box.

This setting may not appear in older DD-WRT firmware builds. If it is not appearing for you, upgrade your DD-WRT firmware.

2. Lower on the same page check the Forced DNS Redirection box.

3. Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page and then wait a full minute and power the FlashRouter off and back on. Reconnect to the FlashRouter’s network once it boots back up and then make sure you are connected to VPN by going to https://whatismyipaddress.com then perform the DNS leak test again.

Adding your VPN provider’s DNS servers to the router’s configuration can be helpful as well. The DNS servers are typically found on the VPN provider’s website or you can reach out to their team for a recommendation of what DNS servers to enter.

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Go to the Service Credentials section and click Verify email. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN OpenVPN.

What are some extra steps I can take to secure my network?

DD-WRT open source firmware removes many firmware vulnerabilities and backdoor access issues that may cause problems in stock firmware. DD-WRT is also updated more frequently than stock firmware, so be sure to always check with the FlashRouter support team to see which DD-WRT build we recommend for the highest level of security for your router at any time.

Aside from avoiding common issues and flaws with stock firmware, DD-WRT give you more control over the firmware settings and allows you to take some extra steps to really lock down your network security. In this article we highlight additional options for WiFi network security and also preventative measures for remote execution attacks.

Wireless MAC Filtering

Navigate to Wireless > MAC Filter

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Enable MAC Filtering

Set Use Filter to Enable.
Select either Prevent or Permit
- Choose Prevent to add MAC addresses that you don’t want to join your network.
- Choose Permit to add MAC addresses that you do want to join your network, automatically blocking all others.
Select Edit MAC Filter List.
Add the MAC Address of the wireless devices you want to prevent or permit. Be sure to use the xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx format. Hint: You can see a list of connected devices MAC Address by clicking Wireless Client MAC List.
Click Save.
Replicate the steps above for each wireless band.
Click Apply Settings.

Disable Remote Access

Navigate to Services > Services

Set SNMP to Disable – this setting disables Simple Network Management Protocol, which prevents software from polling your network for information about connected devices.
Set SSHd to Disable – disabling the Secure Shell is a simple way to prevent root access and brute force attacks on your network.
Set Telnet to Disable – Telnet is a less secure version of SSH to manage your local router network via command line.
Click Apply Settings.

Navigate to Administration > Management

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Settings and Disable Remote Access 2

Set Web GUI Management to Disable.
Set SSH Management to Disable.
Set Telnet Management to Disable.
Set Allow Any Remote IP to Enable – Even though this setting is set to Enable there is no remote access because Web GUI Management is already set to Disable.
Click Apply Settings.

Linksys WRT1900ACS / ACV2 / ACV1 DD-WRT WiFi Settings

Recommended DD-WRT WiFi settings for the Linksys WRT1900AC are based on extensive testing by FlashRouters. Please note that optimal settings may vary depending on external factors such as home size, interference, and the types of WiFi devices you are connecting in your network.

Screenshots below provide a visual display of recommended WiFi and encryption settings exactly as they appear in the Linksys WRT1900AC with DD-WRT firmware.

Please note there are many versions of the WRT1900AC with the same recommended settings, including WRT1900ACv1, WRT1900ACv2, WRT1900ACS, and WRT1900ACSv2.

WRT1900AC DD-WRT Wireless Security

The preset WRT1900AC FlashRouter WiFi password is Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router. For e.g. if your MAC is 6038E07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#6038E

Navigate to the Wireless > Wireless Security to view or edit WiFi passwords.

Access FlashRouter DD-WRT firmware settings

You must be connected to the FlashRouter network via ethernet or WiFi connection on your device in order to be able to access the FlashRouter’s firmware settings.

Why do I need to access my FlashRouter's settings?

It is important to understand how to access your router if you want to:

Change WiFi or admin passwords
Switch VPN server locations
Attempt custom setups
Troubleshoot your network

Connect your device to the FlashRouter network

We recommend using a computer, tablet, or phone to access your FlashRouter firmware settings. You can connect your device to the FlashRouter via Ethernet Cable or Wireless connection.

Please note, you will NOT be able access the firmware settings unless you connect your device to the FlashRouter Network.

Connect an Ethernet cable to your device’s Ethernet port.

Connect the other end of that Ethernet cable to a FlashRouter LAN/numbered port.

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Settings via Ethernet Connection 2

Be sure NOT to connect your device to the WAN/internet port of the FlashRouter. Please use the LAN/numbered ports to connect your devices.

via Wireless

Navigate to the available wireless networks in your device network settings and join any of the available FlashRouter networks – FlashRouter24, FlashRouter50, or FlashRouter80 (if you have a tri-band router).

Access the FlashRouter settings

We recommend using a Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox incognito/private browsing window to access the FlashRouter firmware settings. You can access the main DD-WRT firmware GUI or you can go directly into the FlashRouters Privacy App settings to manage your basic router settings and VPN connection settings right away.

Please note, after accessing the FlashRouter Settings at the Local IP Address, you will be prompted to enter an admin username and password. You can find this information in the subsections below.

DD-WRT - Firmware GUI

Local IP Address: 192.168.11.1

Username: flashrouter

Password: ddwrt

Keep in mind that if you enable HTTPS and disable HTTP access you will need to add https:// in front of the Local IP Address to access your FlashRouter’s firmware settings.

If your router has been reset for any reason then you can access the router at a local IP address of 192.168.1.1.

Please note you will be required to set the administration username and password as well as your WiFi and VPN network settings after a reset.

DD-WRT Router VPN Setup

Why is the internet LED red on my router?

Upon flashing the router from stock manufacturer firmware to DD-WRT firmware many buttons and lights on the router may have altered functionality. With DD-WRT firmware on certain devices a red internet/WAN light means a successful connection. While in factory firmware a red light denotes an issue with your internet connection. For anyone with DD-WRT firmware, this is not something you need to worry about as long as the internet functionality is in fact working.

Separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands on ExpressVPN/Aircove firmware

By default ExpressVPN firmware bonds the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks to a single wireless network name. Your device will automatically choose which one will provide the best connection. You can separate these networks to have unique Wi-Fi names so you can control which network your devices will use.

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Login with your ExpressVPN FlashRouter admin password.

4. Select Network Settings on the left hand side of the menu.

5. Select Wi-Fi Settings on the left hand side of the menu.

6. Click the toggle for Separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.

7. Separate Wi-Fi details for the 5GHz band will now display. You can change the name and password if you so choose or leave it with the default name and password with “-5GHz” added to the name. Click Save. Click Continue.

Use these steps to change your Privacy Hero WiFi name and password.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

If you have not created your Privacy Hero account yet please follow these instructions.

3. Click the Wi-Fi symbol.

4. Click the edit box for the 5GHz network or the 2.4GHz network.

5. Enter the new Wi-Fi name and password you’d like to set. Click Save at the bottom of the page.
