Why are streaming services blocked while connected to VPN?

Streaming services and VPN

Most popular streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime block incoming VPN connections. This does not mean the VPN is not working, it simply means they have recognized you are connecting to a VPN server and filtered that server from being able to stream.

Below are several options for you to follow if you encounter this issue while connected to a VPN on your FlashRouter.

VPN provider server recommendation

Contact your VPN provider for a server recommendation that is not blocked by popular streaming services. Be sure to mention that you are connecting to VPN via a router instead of the computer client. If your VPN provider does not have a helpful suggestion or server recommendation please try the below options or contact us for a solution.

Bypass VPN by device

The FlashRouters Privacy App has a VPN bypass by device feature that can be used on devices dedicated to streaming.

Use SmartDNS

If access to streaming services not in your region is a higher priority for you then VPN encryption we recommend using a SmartDNS service on your FlashRouter to access the content you desire.

Why can’t I send emails while connected to VPN?

Can’t send or receive emails? Connecting to a VPN server can result in your email client not being able to send or receive emails. This can happen for several reasons:

The VPN provider you are connected to is blocking the ports the email client is using (SMTP).
Your email service is blocking access to datacenter IPs
Your email service is only allowing access to residential IPs
Your email service is only allowing access to IPs of its own country
Your email service is only allowing access to certain ISPs

This issue will only occur with email client applications and not with web browser email.

Steps to take if your email is not working

Change SMTP port

Access the settings of your email client and change the SMTP port to 587 or 465.

Change the VPN server

Connect to a different VPN server. The process for changing servers is detailed in your provider’s setup instructions.

Should I be using my computer/phone/tablet VPN app while connected to the FlashRouter?

Do NOT connect to your VPN provider’s computer, phone, or tablet app while connected to the FlashRouter’s network. This may cause issues with access to your DD-WRT router settings as well as your internet connection.
Connect any device in your home network to VPN by joining the FlashRouter’s network.

Privacy Hero VPN Setup Guide for Privacy Hero

Your Privacy Hero router uses Cloud Based router management which means you can access the router settings from anywhere on any device that has an internet connection. You can follow these steps while connected to your phone, other Wi-Fi network, or the Privacy Hero network.

Use these steps to connect to Privacy Hero’s own WireGuard VPN servers. You will automatically be connected to the ideal USA or Canada server based on your location.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

If you have not created your Privacy Hero account yet please follow these instructions.

3. Click the VPN symbol.

4. Set the VPN toggle to On.

5. Connect to the Privacy Hero’s via wireless or ethernet connection on your device and visit What is my IP Address from a private/incognito browser to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Privacy Hero’s cloud based router settings access makes it so you can change settings while not connected to the Privacy Hero network so if your IP Address has not changed be sure to double check that you are indeed connected to the Privacy Hero network on the device you are checking your IP from.

Keep in mind that the VPN connection will not change the location of the streaming services listed in the Streaming Relocation area of the Privacy Hero settings.

ExpressVPN Setup Guide for Privacy Hero

Use these steps to connect to ExpressVPN OpenVPN servers. First you will need to gather your unique OpenVPN login credentials and download the correct .ovpn file from the ExpressVPN website.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

3. Click the VPN symbol.

4. Click the Change button and select Custom from the dropdown.

5. In a new tab login to your ExpressVPN account.

6. Select Manual Configuration from the menu options.

7. Copy and paste the username and password from the blue boxes into the Custom box on your Privacy Hero settings page.

8. Download a server file from any of the available regions shown in the ExpressVPN Manual Configuration section (Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, etc)

9. Drag and drop or click to Upload the server file into the Custom box on your Privacy Hero settings page and then you will need to add one line to the top of the configuration.

10. At the top of your OpenVPN configuration add in the following line as shown in the picture above

Now click the Save button.

11. Your Privacy Hero settings should now show a Connected message, indicating you have successfully signed in to your ExpressVPN server.

12. Connect to the Privacy Hero via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device and visit an IP checker from a private/incognito browser to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Keep in mind that the VPN connection will not change the location of the streaming services listed in the Streaming Relocation area of the Privacy Hero settings if the Streaming Relocation feature is Enabled.

PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) AsusWRT OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for PIA AsusWRT Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

AsusWRT Router Setup for PIA

Login to AsusWRT firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the AsusWRT FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Fusion tab.

3. Click Add profile.

4. In the Connection Name field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here. Our example server was in New York so I have entered in PIA New York.

5. In the VPN Type dropdown select OpenVPN.

6. Click Import .ovpn file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

7. In the Username and Password fields paste in the PIA username and password you use to successfully login to your PIA website account.

8. Click Apply and Enable at the bottom of the page.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the OpenVPN Client profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network click into the profile and disable Apply to all devices. Then click Devices and select the devices that you want to connect to VPN.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful PIA connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit PIA’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

In some cases you may notice that the location is not showing the same location as the server you have input in your router settings; this is because geo tracking tools are often tricked by VPN connections. As long as you see an IP address that is not the same as your normal Internet IP address then you are indeed connected to PIA.

How to change the PIA server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

How to fix an Unidentified Network or Limited Connection.

There are several common reasons that an Unidentified Network or Limited connection message may appear in your device’s network adapter.

Wire the FlashRouter correctly for Internet access. Incorrect wiring is the most common cause of this issue. Make sure you are not wired into the FlashRouter WAN port for access, and make sure the FlashRouter is wired correctly to your main modem or router.
Check that your connected device does not have static settings configured.
Disable and reenable the wireless and/or ethernet adapter on your computer to refresh the network.
Make sure you are not connected to multiple router networks at the same time, via WiFi and wired connection simultaneously.

What are some extra steps I can take to secure my network?

DD-WRT open source firmware removes many firmware vulnerabilities and backdoor access issues that may cause problems in stock firmware. DD-WRT is also updated more frequently than stock firmware, so be sure to always check with the FlashRouter support team to see which DD-WRT build we recommend for the highest level of security for your router at any time.

Aside from avoiding common issues and flaws with stock firmware, DD-WRT give you more control over the firmware settings and allows you to take some extra steps to really lock down your network security. In this article we highlight additional options for WiFi network security and also preventative measures for remote execution attacks.

Wireless MAC Filtering

Navigate to Wireless > MAC Filter

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Enable MAC Filtering

Set Use Filter to Enable.
Select either Prevent or Permit
- Choose Prevent to add MAC addresses that you don’t want to join your network.
- Choose Permit to add MAC addresses that you do want to join your network, automatically blocking all others.
Select Edit MAC Filter List.
Add the MAC Address of the wireless devices you want to prevent or permit. Be sure to use the xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx format. Hint: You can see a list of connected devices MAC Address by clicking Wireless Client MAC List.
Click Save.
Replicate the steps above for each wireless band.
Click Apply Settings.

Disable Remote Access

Navigate to Services > Services

Set SNMP to Disable – this setting disables Simple Network Management Protocol, which prevents software from polling your network for information about connected devices.
Set SSHd to Disable – disabling the Secure Shell is a simple way to prevent root access and brute force attacks on your network.
Set Telnet to Disable – Telnet is a less secure version of SSH to manage your local router network via command line.
Click Apply Settings.

Navigate to Administration > Management

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Settings and Disable Remote Access 2

Set Web GUI Management to Disable.
Set SSH Management to Disable.
Set Telnet Management to Disable.
Set Allow Any Remote IP to Enable – Even though this setting is set to Enable there is no remote access because Web GUI Management is already set to Disable.

How do I find my router local IP address?

The Local IP Address is the address that you can use to access a router’s firmware settings. Use the below instructions to find the local IP Address of the router you are connected to.

Make sure you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet or WiFi. Keep in mind these instructions may vary based on your current software version.

Find IP Address in Windows

1. Open the Window search box, and search “command prompt”

Once you have followed these instructions to find the Local IP Address of the router you can enter the Local IP address in your web browsers URL to access the router’s firmware settings.

Cudy Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Cudy FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port if you purchased a Cudy AX3000 or to ethernet port #1 of the device marked Primary if you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the Cudy router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

The FlashRouter WiFi password is printed on the sheet that came with the router and is set to Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router if you cannot locate the sheet. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.10.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the Cudy firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Cudy FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

7. If you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000 mesh package you can now take the unit labeled Node to the location you want it connecting from and power it up. It will connect to the Primary network that was just setup automatically. You will then see the Mesh Units number increase according to the number that you have purchased shortly.

Why can’t I access router settings?

Be sure to first try the preset details to access your FlashRouter’s settings.

First time setup

Are you connected to the FlashRouter's network?

In order to access the FlashRouter’s settings you need to be connected to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet or WiFi.

It is possible that if you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network you device might have static IP settings from a previous connection preventing it from being read correctly. Check your device’s static IP settings before proceeding.

Is your FlashRouter wired correctly?

Your FlashRouter should be wired as detailed in our Connect FlashRouter to the Internet setup.

A common mistake is to connect from your modem or other router to a LAN/numbered port of the FlashRouter instead of the WAN/Internet port of the FlashRouter as it should be. Doing so results in no access to the FlashRouter’s settings.

How to find you FlashRouter's Local IP Address?

It is possible that your Local IP Address was changed at some point. Your Local IP Address is the address that you can access the FlashRouter’s settings with. We recommend finding the Local IP Address of the FlashRouter.

Was your FlashRouter reset?

If your FlashRouter is showing a local IP Address of 192.168.1.1 and you are seeing ‘dd-wrt’ as an available network in your wireless networks, your FlashRouter was reset. Reconfigure your FlashRouter.

Keep in mind that seeing a Local IP Address of 192.168.1.1 can also mean your are wired incorrectly and the router has not been reset. Be sure to check your wireless networks for ‘dd-wrt’. If the FlashRouter’s wireless network name appears as it was set then your FlashRouter was not reset and you should see the above section.

Why can't I access my FlashRouter after a firmware upgrade?

When performing a firmware upgrade there is a dropdown that has Don’t Reset or Reset to Default settings as options.

If you accidentally selected Reset to Default settings you will need to reconfigure your FlashRouter.

If you had Don’t Reset selected and are still unable to connect to the FlashRouter’s network after a firmware upgrade, first make sure you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network as WiFi can disconnect during an upgrade, and then Reboot the FlashRouter.

ExpressVPN Setup on Roqos

Preparing for ExpressVPN Setup

Obtain your ExpressVPN login information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit ExpressVPN’s website login page.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

Connecting to ExpressVPN in the Roqos Core

Access the Roqos Core UI

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

3. Click the Connect to box.

4. In the Connect dropdown choose 3rd Party VPN Providers and for the VPN Provider dropdown choose ExpressVPN.

In the Username and Password field enter the ExpressVPN OpenVPN Username and Password that you obtained.

Click the Server dropdown and type in or scroll to your preferred server location.

Click the Save button.

Connect to ExpressVPN

Once you click Save you will be returned to the VPN OUT menu.

Click the Connect button to start your ExpressVPN connection. Please be patient as the router connects your entire network through VPN.

Assign devices to connect to VPN

By default there are no devices assigned to the VPN tunnel. Click Included Devices. From this page you can choose if all devices should connect to ExpressVPN or only certain devices.

From the dropdown select Include all devices if you want every device that connects to the Roqos to connect to ExpressVPN. Then click Save.

If you only want specific devices to connect to ExpressVPN while others bypass the VPN connection select Include selected devices from the dropdown and then toggle the sliders for the devices you want connected to VPN. Click Save.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

Make sure you are connected to the Roqos network via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device.

Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP Address and virtual location.

You should see Connected at the top of the page underneath ExpressVPN.

Connect to a different ExpressVPN server

To change your server click Disconnect on the VPN OUT page then return to the Connect To section to select a new server from the Server dropdown and click Save. Now click Connect once again on the VPN Out page.

To disconnect from ExpressVPN click the Disconnect button.

NordVPN Cudy OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Cudy Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

1. There are two options for obtaining the .ovpn file. The first and recommended is to navigate to NordVPN’s server recommendation page. Click Recommended Server to display the fastest server based on your actual location. You can adjust the country if you don’t want to connect to the recommended country.

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

The second method to obtain a server is for connecting to a specific server number that you know you want to use. This applies to NordVPN Dedicated IP servers if you are signed up for that service. Go to NordVPN’s .ovpn file page. Then search for the server number that you want to use and click Download UDP.

Login to Cudy firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Cudy FlashRouter’s network.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

4. Select OpenVPN Client from the Protocol dropdown.

5. Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. You should see the server file name listed next to Current Config File after doing so.

6. Enter your NordVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your NordVPN email login and password.

CyberGhost Merlin OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for CyberGhost Setup

Obtain your CyberGhost OpenVPN information

If you are not already a CyberGhost user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the CyberGhost website.

2. Select VPN.

3. Click Configure New Device.

4. Set Protocol to OpenVPN. Select the Country you would like to connect to. Select the Server Group. Name the device in the Device Name field. Click Save Configuration.

5. Press View configuration.

6. Copy the Username, and Password that appear to a notepad, since you will need this information later in the setup process. Click Download Configuration.

Open the folder that was downloaded. Then open the ca.crt the client.crt, and client.key files with NotePad++ for Windows or TextEdit for Apple. All CyberGhost servers have different keys and certificates.

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file from the folder you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location here. Our example server was in USA so I have entered in CyberGhost USA.

6. Set Accept DNS Configuration to Strict. Set Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel to Yes (all). Set Kill Switch to Yes or No depending on if you want the Internet to be killed if the VPN connection drops.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the OpenVPN Client profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network please set the Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel to VPN Director. Then complete the instructions on this page and then view our VPN Director guide.

7. Enter your CyberGhost OpenVPN username and password that you obtained earlier. Do not enter your account login.

8. Click the Edit button in the Keys and Certificates area.

9. In the Certificate Authority field paste in the entire content of the ca.crt file.

Preparing for IPVanish Cudy Setup

Download your IPVanish .ovpn file

If you are not already an IPVanish user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the IPVanish website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to IPVanish .ovpn file page.

3. Click on the .ovpn file for the server location you want to use to dowloand the .ovpn file. Do not open this file.

Cudy Router Setup for IPVanish

Login to Cudy firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Cudy FlashRouter’s network.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

4. Select OpenVPN Client from the Protocol dropdown.

5. Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. You should see the server file name listed next to Current Config File after doing so.

6. Enter your IPVanish account login email and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password.

Verify a successful IPVanish connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit IPVanish’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the IPVanish server

Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

Preparing for PIA Cudy Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

Cudy Router Setup for PIA

Login to Cudy firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Cudy FlashRouter’s network.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

4. Select OpenVPN Client from the Protocol dropdown.

5. Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. You should see the server file name listed next to Current Config File after doing so.

6. Enter your PIA account login username and password in the Username and Password.

VPN Director for Asus Merlin

Once you have OpenVPN connected on your Merlin FlashRouter you can manage your VPN connections by device or by VPN servers or even VPN providers. This is a major advantage of Asus Merlin firmware as it allows up to 5 VPN connections at the same.

Setup multiple VPN clients

1. Under Advanced Settings select VPN.

2. Click the VPN Client tab.

3. In the Select Client instance dropdown select a new client instance to setup and follow your VPN providers setup guide.

4. Name the client in the Description field for more clarity for which server or provider is being setup.

5. Set the Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel dropdown to VPN Director.

Start or Stop VPN Client

1. Under Advanced Settings select VPN.

2. Click the VPN Director tab.

3. With multiple VPN clients connected you can start and stop them as needed from this page.

Assign a device to a specific VPN client

1. On the VPN Director page click the + symbol next to Add new rule.

2. Select the Interface that you want to add the device to.

3. Click the Local IP dropdown and a full list of devices connected to the Merlin FlashRouter should appear. Select the device you want to assign to this VPN client.

4. Click OK and click Apply.

NordVPN Setup on Roqos

Preparing for NordVPN Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already a NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Connecting to NordVPN in the Roqos Core

Access the Roqos Core UI

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

3. Click the Connect to box.

4. In the Connect dropdown choose 3rd Party VPN Providers and for the VPN Provider dropdown choose NordVPN.

Enter your NordVPN information

In the Username and Password field enter the NordVPN OpenVPN Username and Password that you obtained.

Select a NordVPN server

Navigate to NordVPN server recommendation page. Click Recommended server and select the country you want to connect to and note the server number that appears.

Click the Location dropdown and type in or scroll to the preferred server country.

Click the Server dropdown and type in or scroll to the server number that was recommended. Select the UDP version of the server.

Click the Save button.

Connect to NordVPN

Once you click Save you will be returned to the VPN OUT menu.

Click the Connect button to start your NordVPN connection. Please be patient as the router connects your entire network through VPN.

Assign devices to connect to VPN

By default there are no devices assigned to the VPN tunnel. Click Included Devices. From this page you can choose if all devices should connect to NordVPN or only certain devices.

From the dropdown select Include all devices if you want every device that connects to the Roqos to connect to NordVPN. Then click Save.

If you only want specific devices to connect to NordVPN while others bypass the VPN connection select Include selected devices from the dropdown and then toggle the sliders for the devices you want connected to VPN. Click Save.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

Make sure you are connected to the Roqos network via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device.

Visit NordVPN’s website to verify your new IP Address and Protected Status at the top of the page.

You should see Connected at the top of the page underneath NordVPN.

To disconnect from NordVPN click the Disconnect button.

Connecting to PIA in the Roqos Core

Access the Roqos Core UI

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

3. Click the Connect to box.

Enter your PIA information

In the Username and Password field enter the PIA Username and Password that you logged in with.

Privacy Hero Creating User Profiles and Adding Devices to Profiles

The Privacy Hero router allows for User Profile creation. Doing so allows you to group different user’s devices together to customize the following rules:

Internet access scheduler (Bedtime settings)
Internet Safe Search
Youtube Safe Search
Block Adult Content

This makes the Privacy Hero a great router option for families and internet addicts.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

If you have not created your Privacy Hero account yet please follow these instructions.

3. Click the Profiles symbol.

4. Click Create New Profile.

5. Set the Profile Name, select the Profile Icon, and click Save.

6. Click the name of the User Profile.

7. Select Devices.

8. Select Manage Devices.

9. If you have not already connected your devices to the Privacy Hero network via wireless or ethernet you can do so now. Refresh the page after connecting a new device and it will appear in the list where you can select Move to “Profile Name” to move the device to the appropriate profile. By default new devices are in the Shared profile.

If your devices were already connected to the Privacy Hero network and you are having issues identifying them I would recommend the following steps:

Click the Devices icon.
Select the device in question.
Click Nerd and note down the IP Address of the device.
Go to the network settings of your device where it will display the local IP Address and match that to the IP Address noted in Privacy Hero.

This is how you can identify a device that is not properly named.

10. Now that your devices are assigned you can set the Bedtime Settings (Internet Scheduler) and Safe Surf settings for your new Profile.

ExpressVPN Setup for AsusWRT Firmware Routers

You can connect to ExpressVPN on your AsusWRT router using OpenVPN.

Quick Options

OpenVPN: Download your preferred server .ovpn configuration file from the ExpressVPN website.

If you are not already a ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

EXPRESSVPN SETUP GUIDE FOR ASUSWRT

1. Log in to your account on the ExpressVPN website.

2. In the “Set up your devices” section, click More and select Manual Configuration from the menu options.

3. Copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right

4. Download a server file from any of the available regions shown in the ExpressVPN Manual Configuration section (Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, etc)

5. Log in to the Asus settings page by connecting to the Asus router’s WiFi (or wired LAN) on your computer. Then, enter 192.168.50.1 or asusrouter.com in the browser.

6. Navigate to the VPN tab and then click on the VPN Fusion tab, then click Add Profile

7. Fill in your NordVPN information then click Apply and Enable.

Connection Name: Choose a name for your ExpressVPN OpenVPN connection.
VPN Type: Select OpenVPN
Import .ovpn File: Upload the OpenVPN file that you downloaded.
Username and Password: Copy and paste your ExpressVPN manual service credentials from step 3.

8. You should now see the Profile say Connected, indicating that the NordVPN server is successfully connected to your router.

9. The VPN connection is automatically set to Apply to all devices.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the VPN, then turn off the VPN connection and switch off Apply to all devices.

Now click the pencil next to the Device section and select the devices (computer, phone, etc.) that you want to connect to VPN. Click OK and then click Apply all settings.

Connect your devices to the Asus router network and visit the ExpressVPN website, at the top it should display Your Status: Protected.
Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

🚫📱Do not run ExpressVPN apps on devices connected to your ExpressVPNrouter. Using the app at the same time as the router VPN may cause conflicts and connection issues.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Flint or Slate GL.iNet router to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port of the Flint or Slate GL.iNet router.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the GL.iNet firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Flint/Slate GL.iNet router is receiving a WAN IP Address and webpages are loading while connected to its network.

Why is my WiFi signal weak?

If you find that wireless signal strength is weak while connected to the FlashRouter’s network we recommend that you do the following:

Make sure that you have the external antennas fully connected to the FlashRouter.
“Forget” the wireless network on the device and then rejoin with a fresh connection. This will be different for each device but can be effective.
Make sure you are within an appropriate range for the network you are using. Keep in mind that a 2.4GHz network will always have better range than 5GHz networks. Devices further away from the router should use the 2.4GHz network.
Interference from your wireless environment can also cause this issue. On the Wireless > Basic Settings adjust the Wireless Channel for the network you are experiencing the issue for. Channel interference is a likely cause for weak signal strength.

TP-Link Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new TP-Link FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

Connect FlashRouter to Internet

All FlashRouters are compatible with all ISP service types such as fiber, cable, DSL, and satellite. As long as you have a modem, modem/router, or router capable of an ethernet connection your FlashRouter will have no problems connecting to the internet.

Internet Service Providers (ISP) include a modem or modem/router combo to connect your network devices to the internet. In some instances your ISP will provide a separate router as well as the modem. You can replace this router with a FlashRouter or use both in a dual router setup.

Single router setup

If you would like to replace your outdated router or avoid paying to rent a router from your ISP then you should use a FlashRouter as the only WiFi device in your network.

In a single router setup the FlashRouter will be wired directly to your modem via ethernet cable and will be the only router in the setup.

Connect to your ISP modem

Wire an ethernet cable from an open ethernet port on your modem to the WAN/internet port of the FlashRouter.

On Asus FlashRouters the WAN/internet port will be blue.

Power cycle modem and router

Once you have properly connected an ethernet cable from your modem into the FlashRouter internet port you must power cycle your network devices to establish an internet connection.

Power off your ISP modem and the FlashRouter.
Power on the ISP modem and wait for it to fully boot up.
Power on the FlashRouter.

Dual router setup

If you would like to keep your existing WiFi network in place, and simply want to add in a VPN WiFi network with a FlashRouter then you can do so using a dual router setup. No settings in your existing network router need to change to add a FlashRouter in a dual router setup. Since we preset all FlashRouters to a unique Local IP Address, there won’t be a conflict with your existing router.

In a dual router setup the FlashRouter is wired to your existing router via ethernet cable and you will have two completely segmented WiFi networks available.

Connect to your existing router

Remember if your existing router is connecting to the internet without issue already, make sure to keep the ethernet cable between your modem and existing router internet port in place.

Now connect another ethernet cable from a LAN/numbered port on your existing router to the WAN/internet port of the FlashRouter.

Reference the images above to see your WAN/internet port color.

Power cycle all network devices

Once you have properly connected an ethernet cable from your existing router into the FlashRouter internet port you must power cycle your network devices to establish an internet connection.

Power off your ISP modem, existing router, and the FlashRouter.
Power on the ISP modem and wait for it to fully boot up.
Power on the existing router and wait for it to fully boot up.
Power on the FlashRouter.

Verify a successful internet connection

Once the power cycling steps are complete and the FlashRouter is powered up, start connecting your internet capable devices via ethernet or WiFi. Visit any website and make sure the page fully loads.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet Change Wi-Fi name and password

Follow this guide to change the Wi-Fi name and password on your GL.iNet FlashRouter.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

3. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the GL.iNet firmware settings.

4. Click Wireless.

5. Click Modify under the 5GHz or 2.4GHz band.

The 5GHz and 2.4GHz information must be changed at separate times. Keep in mind that if you are connected to wireless when changing one band you may need to reconnect with the new info you set to be on the network again to make changes to the other band.

6. Change the Wi-Fi Name (SSID) and Wi-Fi Password fields to what you want to use. The SSID should be unique and NOT a duplicate of an existing network. Click Apply.

7. Connect your devices to the new wireless network.

Verify your PureVPN login information

If you are not already an PureVPN user Sign Up Now.

Log in to your account on the PureVPN website.

Navigate to the Home page and note the VPN username on this page. You will need this specific username later on in the configuration process.
