ExpressVPN Setup on Roqos

Preparing for ExpressVPN Setup

Obtain your ExpressVPN login information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit ExpressVPN’s website login page.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

Connecting to ExpressVPN in the Roqos Core

Access the Roqos Core UI

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

3. Click the Connect to box.

4. In the Connect dropdown choose 3rd Party VPN Providers and for the VPN Provider dropdown choose ExpressVPN.

Enter your ExpressVPN information

In the Username and Password field enter the ExpressVPN OpenVPN Username and Password that you obtained.

Select an ExpressVPN server

Click the Server dropdown and type in or scroll to your preferred server location.

Click the Save button.

Connect to ExpressVPN

Once you click Save you will be returned to the VPN OUT menu.

Click the Connect button to start your ExpressVPN connection. Please be patient as the router connects your entire network through VPN.

Assign devices to connect to VPN

By default there are no devices assigned to the VPN tunnel. Click Included Devices. From this page you can choose if all devices should connect to ExpressVPN or only certain devices.

From the dropdown select Include all devices if you want every device that connects to the Roqos to connect to ExpressVPN. Then click Save.

If you only want specific devices to connect to ExpressVPN while others bypass the VPN connection select Include selected devices from the dropdown and then toggle the sliders for the devices you want connected to VPN. Click Save.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

Make sure you are connected to the Roqos network via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device.

Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP Address and virtual location.

You should see Connected at the top of the page underneath ExpressVPN.

Connect to a different ExpressVPN server

To change your server click Disconnect on the VPN OUT page then return to the Connect To section to select a new server from the Server dropdown and click Save. Now click Connect once again on the VPN Out page.

Disconnect from ExpressVPN

To disconnect from ExpressVPN click the Disconnect button.

How do I access my Roqos device settings?

Your Roqos Core’s settings or UI (User Interface) is accessible via a secure cloud based connection rather than the typical local access of other routers. This means that you can manage your Roqos from anywhere in the world not just at home.

Visit the Roqos Login URL

From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit login.roqos.com

Login with your Roqos account

Enter in the email and password that you set when your Roqos was initially setup. If you still need to create your Roqos account and activate your Roqos follow our Activate and Connect Roqos to Internet guide.

Proceed with making the changes to the settings you desire

Now that you are logged in to your Roqos UI you adjust any settings as you see fit for your network. For guides on how to make specific changes to your Roqos view our Roqos Setup Guide area.

NordVPN Asus AX1800S OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Asus AX1800S Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

1. There are two options for obtaining the .ovpn file. The first and recommended is to navigate to NordVPN’s server recommendation page. Click Recommended Server to display the fastest server based on your actual location. You can adjust the country if you don’t want to connect to the recommended country.

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

The second method to obtain a server is for connecting to a specific server number that you know you want to use. This applies to NordVPN Dedicated IP servers if you are signed up for that service. Go to NordVPN’s .ovpn file page. Then search for the server number that you want to use and click Download UDP.

Asus AX1800S Router Setup for NordVPN

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Add Profile.

4. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here.

6. Enter your NordVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your NordVPN email login and password. Click OK.

7. Click the Activate button.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

You should now see a check mark in the Connection Status area.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

In some cases you may notice that the location is not showing the same location as the server you have input in your router settings; this is because geo tracking tools are often tricked by VPN connections. As long as you see an IP address that is not the same as your normal Internet IP address then you are indeed connected to NordVPN.

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.
Be sure to deactivate a previously active connection before activating the new one. You do not want to connect to two at the same time.

Roqos VPN Connected, but my device IP is unchanged

If your VPN Out page in your Roqos settings is reporting that you are Connected to your VPN provider but your IP Address and location have not changed when you visit What is my IP address? follow the below checklist.

Double check that your device is connected to the Roqos network

Since the Roqos UI is being accessed securely via the cloud you can change the settings while your device is not connected to the Roqos network. This would result in your IP Address not updating when you connect to VPN.

Make sure that you are connected to your Roqos WiFi network or from an ethernet port on the back of the Roqos directly to your device and not another network.

Assign Devices To Connect To VPN in the Roqos

By default there are no devices assigned to the VPN tunnel. To assign devices to the Roqos’ VPN connection.

1. Login to your Roqos UI.

2. Select the VPN tab on the left hand menu and select VPN Out.

3. Click Included Devices. From this page you can choose if all devices should connect to VPN or only certain devices.

4. From the dropdown select Include all devices if you want every device that connects to the Roqos to connect to VPN or if you only want specific devices to connect to VPN while others bypass the VPN connection select Include selected devices from the dropdown and then toggle the sliders for the devices you want connected to VPN. Click Save.

Turn off VPN device applications

Connecting to VPN via a device application or browser extension at the same time while connecting via your Roqos is not recommended. Doubling up on VPN connections can cause issues with speeds and stability.

When you are connected to the Roqos VPN network at home you should leave all VPN applications and extensions disconnected and unopened.

Preparing for PIA Asus AX1800S Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

Asus AX1800S Router Setup for PIA

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Add Profile.

4. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

6. Enter your PIA account username and password.

7. Click the Activate button.

Why can’t I send emails while connected to VPN?

Can’t send or receive emails? Connecting to a VPN server can result in your email client not being able to send or receive emails. This can happen for several reasons:

The VPN provider you are connected to is blocking the ports the email client is using (SMTP).
Your email service is blocking access to datacenter IPs
Your email service is only allowing access to residential IPs
Your email service is only allowing access to IPs of its own country
Your email service is only allowing access to certain ISPs

This issue will only occur with email client applications and not with web browser email.

Steps to take if your email is not working

Change SMTP port

Access the settings of your email client and change the SMTP port to 587 or 465.

Change the VPN server

Connect to a different VPN server. The process for changing servers is detailed in your provider’s setup instructions.

Wireless Repeater – WiFi as WAN on Roqos

WiFi as WAN is a feature of the Roqos software which allows you to use an existing WiFi network as the Internet source for the Roqos router instead of an ethernet cable connection. This is a great solution for travelling users who do not have access to the modem/router in their hotel or AirBnB.

1. Click the navigation menu and select Basic Settings > Internet Settings.

2. Click WiFi as WAN.

3. Scroll down and select the existing WiFi network you wish to use for WAN/Internet from the Nearby Wireless Networks list.

4. Enter the correct password for the existing WiFi network and click Connect.

5. Toggle the Enable slide and click Save.

Be patient as the connection is made. It usually takes 30 seconds to a minute to connect. Then test that your Internet is working while connected to the Roqos network.

GL.iNet Router Setup for ExpressVPN

Login to GL.iNet firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network. For more instructions on how to access the firmware settings view our guide here.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab and select OpenVPN Client.

2. Click New Group.

3. Enter ExpressVPN and click the check mark.

4. Select the .ovpn file(s) you downloaded earlier and upload them here.

5. Enter in the ExpressVPN username and password that you obtained earlier. Do NOT enter your ExpressVPN account email and password login. Click Apply.

6. Select VPN Dashboard.

7. Set the Enable toggle to On to begin the ExpressVPN connection.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

You should now see information appear in the Server Address, Server Listen Port, Traffic Statistics, and Client Virtual IP areas.
Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the ExpressVPN server

Download a new .ovpn file location as detailed above.
In the ExpressVPN Group on the OpenVPN Client area click Upload Configuration File and select the new .ovpn file.
Click VPN Dashboard and then click the Configuration File area and select the new location that you added.
Click Apply.

Ad blocking on Roqos

Enable Ad blocking on your Roqos Core so you are not inundated with ads across the internet.

1. Click the navigation menu and select Cybersecurity > Ad blocker.

2. Toggle the Enable slider and select if you want to apply Ad blocking to all devices or only select profiles and click Save.

Cudy Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Cudy FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port if you purchased a Cudy AX3000 or to ethernet port #1 of the device marked Primary if you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the Cudy router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

The FlashRouter WiFi password is printed on the sheet that came with the router and is set to Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router if you cannot locate the sheet. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.10.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the Cudy firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Cudy FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

7. If you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000 mesh package you can now take the unit labeled Node to the location you want it connecting from and power it up. It will connect to the Primary network that was just setup automatically. You will then see the Mesh Units number increase according to the number that you have purchased shortly.

Block Websites by Country on Roqos

Country Block allows you to select countries that you identify to be an unsafe and block internet traffic between your network and those countries.

1. Click the navigation menu and select Cybersecurity > Country Block.

2. Toggle the Country Block setting.

Managing User Profiles on Roqos

User Profiles allow you to organize your devices connected to the Roqos Core. This allow you to see a user profile’s usage history, set a schedule when devices are allowed to connect to the Internet, and filter out specific content such as explicit websites and games.

Adding new User Profile

1. Click the navigation menu and select Users.

2. To add a new User Profile click Add User.

3. In the Name field enter the name for the User Profile. You can add an image for the User Profile here as well.

4. You will see a list of devices connected to the Roqos Core at the bottom of the page. Check the box of the devices that you would like to add to this User Profile. Then click Save.

Tracking Usage History

1. Click the User Profile that you want to review.

2. Select Usage History.

3. On the new page you can view usage by Top Visited, All Activity, and Activity Graph.

Schedule Pauses

1. Click the User Profile that you want to review.

2. Select Scheduled Pauses.

3. Click Add Schedule.

4. From here you can set the name of the schedule, the days that the schedule will be in effect, and if the schedule should be applied all day or during specific hours. Click Save.

Filters

1. Click the User Profile that you want to review.

2. Select Filters.

3. From here you can use the toggle to Block explicit websites and Block explicit search results.

4. In the Safe Youtube dropdown you can select None, Moderate, or Strict.

5. The Blocked Content area allows you to block specific services such as Games and Social Media.

6. Add specific websites to the Block Sites list if the above policies did not cover them.

7. Add specific websites to the Allowed Sites list if you want to block all websites except for a few.

VPN Kill Switch on Roqos

The VPN Kill Switch disables the Internet connection on your Roqos Core in the even that your VPN disconnects. Internet access of all your devices will be blocked when the kill switch is enabled – except for the ones you have excluded from VPN Out.

Select devices for VPN on Roqos

Select specific devices that you want to pass through the Roqos Core’s VPN tunnel. This is a great solution in instances of streaming services blocking incoming VPN connections or other VPN related service interruptions.

1. Click the navigation menu and select VPN > VPN Out.

2. Select Included Devices.

3. In the Select devices for your VPN Out connection dropdown select Include selected devices and check the devices you want to connect to VPN. Click Save.

Now these devices will be connected to the VPN tunnel. All other devices will bypass the VPN tunnel and use your ISP’s IP Address.

Cudy Change Wi-Fi name and password

Follow this guide to change the Wi-Fi name and password on your Cudy FlashRouter.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the Cudy router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.10.1

3. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the Cudy firmware settings.

3. Click General Settings.

4. Click Wireless.

5. Change the SSID and Password fields for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.The SSIDs should be unique and NOT a duplicate of an existing network. Click Save & Apply.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet PureVPN WireGuard Setup

Preparing for PureVPN GL.iNet Setup

Obtain PureVPN WireGuard file

If you are not already an PureVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PureVPN website.

2. Select Manual Configuration.

3. Select the Server Location you want to connect to and then click Download.

4. In the Select Protocol dropdown choose WireGuard.

5. In the Select Device dropdown choose DD-WRT. Then click Generate Configuration. This will save a .conf file to your computer.

GL.iNet Router Setup for PureVPN

1. Navigate to the VPN tab and select WireGuard Client.

2. Click New Group.

3. Enter PureVPN and click the check mark.

4. Select the .conf file you downloaded earlier and upload it here.

5. Click Apply.

6. Select VPN Dashboard.

7. Set the Enable toggle to On to begin the PureVPN connection.

Verify a successful PureVPN connection

You should now see information appear in the Server Address, Server Listen Port, Traffic Statistics, and Client Virtual IP areas.
Visit PureVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the PureVPN server

Replicate the steps above with a new location.

NordVPN Cudy OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Cudy Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

Login to Cudy firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Cudy FlashRouter’s network.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

4. Select OpenVPN Client from the Protocol dropdown.

5. Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. You should see the server file name listed next to Current Config File after doing so.

6. Enter your NordVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your NordVPN email login and password.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the NordVPN server

Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

ExpressVPN Cudy OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for ExpressVPN Cudy Setup

Obtain your ExpressVPN OpenVPN Information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the ExpressVPN website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

Download your IPVanish .ovpn file

If you are not already an IPVanish user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the IPVanish website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to IPVanish .ovpn file page.

3. Click on the .ovpn file for the server location you want to use to dowloand the .ovpn file. Do not open this file.

PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) Cudy OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for PIA Cudy Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

Cudy Router Setup for PIA

Login to Cudy firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Cudy FlashRouter’s network.

1. Click General Settings.

2. Click VPN.

3. Toggle the Enable switch to On.

4. Select OpenVPN Client from the Protocol dropdown.

5. Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. You should see the server file name listed next to Current Config File after doing so.

6. Enter your PIA account login username and password in the Username and Password.

7. Click Save & Apply at the bottom of the page.

ProtonVPN Merlin WireGuard Setup

Preparing for ProtonVPN Merlin Setup

Download your ProtonVPN .conf file

If you are not already an ProtonVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the ProtonVPN website.

2. Click Downloads.

3. Scroll down to WireGuard configuration and name the device FlashRouter.

4. Select Router as the platform.

5. Select the VPN options that best fit your needs. We typically use the settings as seen in the screenshot here if you are unsure.

6. Next select the server that you would like to connect to and click Create. At the top of the page you’ll see ProtonVPN’s recommended server which we recommend using unless you need to connect to a specific location.

If you need a specific server location find it in the list and click Create.

7. After clicking Create a new window will appear. Click Download to download the .conf file to your computer.

Merlin Router Setup for ProtonVPN

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Select WireGuard as the VPN Protocol.

4. Click Choose file and select the .conf file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this WireGuard Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location here. Our example server was in US-NY#61 so I have entered in ProtonVPN NY-61.

6. Set Enable WireGuard to Yes.

7. Click Apply at the bottom of the page and you should then see a Connected message appear.

8. By default no devices are assigned to the new active WireGuard connection profile. Click the VPN Director tab to assign specific devices to the new WireGuard profile. Your IP will not be changed on your devices yet.

9. On the VPN Director page click the + symbol next to Add new rule.

10. Select the new WireGuard profile in the Interface dropdown.

11. In the Local IP field enter in 192.168.50.0/24 if you want ALL devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network to use the WireGuard VPN connection. Click OK.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the WireGuard Client profile you have setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network please complete the instructions on our VPN Director guide.

12. Then click Apply at the bottom of the page.

Verify a successful ProtonVPN connection

Visit ProtonVPN’s IP Check from a private/incognito browsing window to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the ProtonVPN server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .conf file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

Roqos Core Internet Setup and Activation

Follow this article when you receive your new Roqos Core router to create your Roqos account, connect your Roqos to the Internet, and customize your network so it is ready to use.

Create your Roqos account

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit login.roqos.com

2. Select Create Account.

3. Enter the Email address and password you want to set for your Roqos account. This will be your login to the Roqos settings moving forward. Click Next.

4. Enter the name and phone number you want associated with your Roqos. Click Next.

5. Enter the address where your Roqos is located. This section may require a CAPTCHA to be completed to authenticate you are human. Click Create Account.

6. You have now created your Roqos account. In a new tab proceed to open the email from Roqos and click the Activate account button.

Activate your Roqos Internet

1. From the Account created page click Next to begin the Internet Setup of the Roqos.

2. Select the Roqos model Teal RC10-P. Click Next.

3. Connect the ethernet cable that came with your Roqos from the port labeled INTERNET on the back of your Roqos to an open ethernet port on your ISP Modem or other router in your network.

4. Then connect the power adapter that came with the Roqos to the back of the Roqos. Wait for the light on the Roqos to begin blinking blue. Once your see the blinking blue lights on the Roqos click Next.

If your Roqos lights does not begin blinking blue after a long while please see the steps in this article and contact us.

5. Enter in the Roqos serial number found on the bottom of the device exactly as it appears there. Click Next.

Setup your Roqos Network

1. Enter in a name that you would like to call the Roqos. This is just the Roqo’s device name and it is not the WiFi network name. Click Next.

2. Select the Time Zone of your actual location from the dropdown. Click Next.

3. Set the WiFi name and password for the Roqos. The WiFi name should be unique and not a duplicate of an existing wireless network. This will be the name that appears in your wireless devices available network list and the password to join the devices to the network. Click Next.

4. Select the custom alert settings as you best see fit using the toggle switches. We typically recommend having the first two toggles selected for Email Alerts and Consolidate Security Alerts. Click Next.

Begin connecting your devices to the Roqos network

You are now done setting up your Roqos to connect to the Internet and can begin joining your wireless devices to the Roqos network and exploring the Roqos Core Features.
