Cudy Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Cudy FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port if you purchased a Cudy AX3000 or to ethernet port #1 of the device marked Primary if you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the Cudy router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

The FlashRouter WiFi password is printed on the sheet that came with the router and is set to Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router if you cannot locate the sheet. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.10.1

5. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the Cudy firmware settings.

6. Verify that your Cudy FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

7. If you purchased a Cudy M1800 or Cudy M3000 mesh package you can now take the unit labeled Node to the location you want it connecting from and power it up. It will connect to the Primary network that was just setup automatically. You will then see the Mesh Units number increase according to the number that you have purchased shortly.

Getflix SmartDNS Setup

Getflix offers a SmartDNS service for unblocking geo-restricted content without the encryption of a VPN service. SmartDNS routes DNS servers to different regions which “tricks” the website to allow access to previously restricted content.

SmartDNS does not change your IP Address or provide the encryption that a VPN connection does. This can result in faster speeds and unblocked content.

SmartDNS and VPN should not both be configured at the same time. When using a SmartDNS connection make sure to disable your VPN connection on the FlashRouter.

Login to Getflix

If you are not already a Getflix user Sign Up Now.

Visit Getflix’s DNS servers list page and note the DNS servers of the location you would like to access content from.

Enter Getflix SmartDNS servers on your FlashRouter

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Scroll down to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP).
Enter in any combination of Getflix SmartDNS servers you noted into Static DNS fields 1 and 2.
Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page.
Reboot the FlashRouter.

Register your IP Address

When the router is fully booted back up visit your Getflix user dashboard and make sure your IP Address is registered with Getflix. If it is not click Force IP Update.

Once you are successfully registered you can now access your desired regional content on any device that connects to the FlashRouter’s network.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet PureVPN WireGuard Setup

Preparing for PureVPN GL.iNet Setup

Obtain PureVPN WireGuard file

If you are not already an PureVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PureVPN website.

2. Select Manual Configuration.

3. Select the Server Location you want to connect to and then click Download.

4. In the Select Protocol dropdown choose WireGuard.

5. In the Select Device dropdown choose DD-WRT. Then click Generate Configuration. This will save a .conf file to your computer.

GL.iNet Router Setup for PureVPN

Login to GL.iNet firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the GL.iNet FlashRouter’s network. For more instructions on how to access the firmware settings view our guide here.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab and select WireGuard Client.

2. Click New Group.

3. Enter PureVPN and click the check mark.

4. Select the .conf file you downloaded earlier and upload it here.

5. Click Apply.

6. Select VPN Dashboard.

7. Set the Enable toggle to On to begin the PureVPN connection.

Verify a successful PureVPN connection

You should now see information appear in the Server Address, Server Listen Port, Traffic Statistics, and Client Virtual IP areas.
Visit PureVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

In some cases you may notice that the location is not showing the same location as the server you have input in your router settings; this is because geo tracking tools are often tricked by VPN connections. As long as you see an IP address that is not the same as your normal Internet IP address then you are indeed connected to PureVPN.

Connecting to OpenVPN on Asus Merlin Firmware

To setup VPN on your Asuswrt Merlin router, you will need to first download an OpenVPN (.ovpn) file from your VPN service provider and load it onto your router.

Review your specific VPN service instructions below. Follow these instructions to locate and upload your OpenVPN file. Depending on the VPN service, there may be additional steps and configurations required to complete the setup.

Using Asuswrt Merlin’s VPN Director, your router can store up to five different VPN connections and switch between them at will.

When is a router reset needed?

A reset of the FlashRouter should only be performed in the following instances:

You have exhausted all other troubleshooting methods and cannot access your router settings.
Password to access the FlashRouter’s settings are not working.
Power light on the router is blinking steadily.
Router is not accessible after upgrading the firmware

Reset Router

Asus FlashRouters:

While the router is powered off press and hold the WPS button on the back or side of the router. Power up the router while continuing to hold the WPS. Continue to hold for 15 seconds as the router powers on (note this could be up to 45 seconds on some models before lights flash).
You will see the lights on the router flashing steadily and this is how you know you have reset the router.
Let the router sit for about a minute and then reboot the router.

Aircove, Linksys and Netgear FlashRouters:

While the router is plugged in, find the reset button located on the back of the router. You will need a pin or pencil to hold down the button for 15 seconds.
You will see the lights on the back of the router flash simultaneously and this is how you know you have reset the router.
Let the router sit for about a minute and then reboot the router.

Access Router Settings

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

The wireless network will appear as “Aircove”, “Linksys##”, “Netgear##”, or “Asus” and the password to join the network will be the default wireless password printed on the bottom of the router.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Click Get Started on the ExpressVPN page that is displayed.

4a. If your FlashRouter is wired to the Internet correctly then you will be prompted to enter your ExpressVPN Activation Code found in your ExpressVPN account. Paste that in and click Sign in to ExpressVPN.

4b. If your FlashRouter is not wired correctly or is not receiving Internet properly make sure you are wired as detailed in the diagram that appears. If you are stuck at this screen we recommend powering off your ISP modem and any other router that the ExpressVPN FlashRouter is wired to and then powering them back up one by one.

Proceed with step “4a” above once the router is receiving Internet and you are prompted to enter the Activation Code.

5. Select if you want to share anonymous crash report data with ExpressVPN to help them improve the firmware for future releases.

6. Set the WiFi name and password your wireless devices will use to connect to the FlashRouter’s network. Make sure the WiFi name is unique and not a duplicate of an existing WiFi name if you change it. You can also leave it as the default information if you like. Click Continue.

7. Enter the admin password you will use to access the ExpressVPN router settings. Be sure to TYPE CAREFULLY when setting the admin password as a typo will result in needing to reset the router again. Note this password in a secure location or commit it to memory.

8. Your ExpressVPN FlashRouter is now fully setup!

How do I upgrade the Asus Merlin firmware of my FlashRouter?

Download the latest AsusWRT Merlin firmware build for your specific FlashRouter model at the Asus Merlin download website. Contact support@flashrouters.com if you are uncertain about your router model or your router model is not available. Click your router model and then select the Release folder.

Make sure you are following the directions below to load the firmware file into the router settings and not trying to open the firmware file on its own.

Access the FlashRouter via wired connection. It is possible to upgrade firmware via WiFi, but this is not recommended unless you are unable to wire directly to the router.

Why is my router not connecting to internet?

Router not connecting to the internet? Follow these simple steps!

Make sure that you are not setting a WAN IP of 0.0.0.0 in the top right corner of your FlashRouter DD-WRT settings. If you do, then make sure your FlashRouter is wired correctly for Internet.
Try power cycling your ISP modem, FlashRouter and any other router that may be in the setup. Power the modem back on first, wait for it to boot up fully, and then power the FlashRouter back on.
Make sure you do not have Global Kill Switch enabled in the FlashRouters Privacy App and if you do make sure your VPN status is Connected.

Why is the power light on my FlashRouter blinking?

A slowly blinking power light means that the FlashRouter was somehow put into Rescue/Restore/Recovery Mode. This usually happens if the reset button was held down for too long.

This may also happen if you have incorrectly tried to update the firmware on your FlashRouter. The first thing to try is a simple reboot of the router to see if it exits restore mode.

If a reboot does not clear up the issue then try to reset and reconfigure your FlashRouter.

What is a Teamviewer session?

A Teamviewer session is the most hands on method of receiving support from FlashRouters.

A support agent will connect directly to your computer and proceed to configure or troubleshoot your FlashRouter with you present.

We use Teamviewer sessions to troubleshoot any issue an eligible customer may have with a FlashRouter that was purchased from us or to configure a compatible router that your purchased independently along with a FlashRouters Support Plan.

In the session a chat window will appear so we can communicate directly with you in real time.

If you follow the information below prior to your session and all goes smoothly a Teamviewer session typically takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

Do I qualify for a Teamviewer session?

When purchasing a FlashRouter you are able to select a Quarterly or Yearly Bronze, Silver or Gold subscription plan.

Silver Yearly plan comes with one Teamviewer remote support session a year.

Gold Quarterly and Yearly plans come with one session per quarter.

How do I schedule a Teamviewer session?

We are available for scheduled Teamviewer sessions from 10AM – 6:00PM ET Monday through Saturday.

If we are available off hours we do our best to accommodate off hours session times with at least 24 hours notification.

Recommended computer and network setup

What computer should I use for Teamviewer?

Teamviewer sessions can not be performed on phones or tablets at this time. We require a Windows or Mac computer to successfully connect and configure your FlashRouter.

Below are the different scenarios from most ideal to least ideal.

I have a Dual Router Setup and a computer with WiFi and Ethernet

If you have an available wireless network NOT coming from the FlashRouter and have a computer that has wireless AND Ethernet capabilities you should be setup as follows:

Connect via wireless to the other router.
Once we have joined the session we will instruct you to wire from the FlashRouter to your computer.

I have a Dual Router Setup and a computer with WiFi only

If you have an available wireless network NOT coming from the FlashRouter and have a computer that has wireless only you should be setup as follows:

Obtaining a USB to Ethernet adapter is ideal.
If that is not possible connect to the FlashRouter’s network via wireless.

Session disconnects may occur with no backup Internet connection.

I have a Single Router Setup and a computer with WiFi and Ethernet

If the FlashRouter is your only wireless network and your computer has wireless and Ethernet capabilities you should be setup as follows:

Connect an Ethernet cable from a numbered port on your FlashRouter directly to your computer.
We may ask you during the session if your smartphone can broadcast an wireless hotspot we can connect to for backup Internet.

I have a Single Router Setup and a computer with WiFi only

If the FlashRouter if your only wireless network and your computer is wireless only you should be setup as follows:

Obtaining a USB to Ethernet adapter is ideal.
If that is not possible connect to the FlashRouter’s network via wireless.

Change your Merlin FlashRouter’s WiFi Network Name to different names for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands so they can be joined separately.

1. Under General select Network Map.

2. In the Network name (SSID) field enter two different names for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the TP-Link router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to tplinkwifi.net

3. Enter tp-link as the admin password to access the TP-Link firmware settings.

Why is the internet LED red on my router?

Upon flashing the router from stock manufacturer firmware to DD-WRT firmware many buttons and lights on the router may have altered functionality. With DD-WRT firmware on certain devices a red internet/WAN light means a successful connection. While in factory firmware a red light denotes an issue with your internet connection. For anyone with DD-WRT firmware, this is not something you need to worry about as long as the internet functionality is in fact working.

Follow this article when you receive your new ExpressVPN FlashRouter to connect your FlashRouter to the Internet via ExpressVPN and customize your network so it is ready to use.

Obtain your ExpressVPN Activation Code

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit ExpressVPN’s website login page.

2. Copy your ExpressVPN Activation code and paste it into a document or leave this page open while you proceed with the instructions.

Access Router Settings

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Click Get Started on the ExpressVPN page that is displayed.

Proceed with step “4a” above once the router is receiving Internet and you are prompted to enter the Activation Code.

5. Select if you want to share anonymous crash report data with ExpressVPN to help them improve the firmware for future releases.

8. Your ExpressVPN FlashRouter is now fully setup!

DNS Setup for Asus Merlin

Enter custom DNS servers in your Asus Merlin firmware to avoid using your ISP DNS, which will steal and collect your browsing data.

1. Under Advanced Settings select LAN.

2. Click the DHCP Server tab.

3. In the DNS Server 1 and DNS Server 2 fields enter the DNS server that you wish to use.

4. Click Apply and then reboot the router and reconnect to the network.

TP-Link Internet Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new TP-Link FlashRouter to connect it to the Internet.

1. Connect the ethernet cable that came with the router from an open LAN ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN port of the TP-Link.

2. Connect the power to the router and wait about 2 minutes for the router to fully boot up.

3. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the TP-Link router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Be sure to capitalize the W.

4. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to tplinkwifi.net

5. Enter tp-link as the admin password to access the TP-Link firmware settings.

6. Verify that your TP-Link FlashRouter is reporting as Internet and WAN Connected.

Why are some of my devices not connecting to the internet?

Make sure you are not using any device VPN device application or proxy on devices that are connected to the FlashRouter’s network as this can cause a conflict. Make sure the FlashRouter’s VPN connection is the only active VPN connection in your network.
Check that static settings are not configured on your device.
Certain devices require port forwarding rules to be properly setup before full connectivity. This may apply to devices like VOIP or smart cameras. If this is the case you may need to contact the manufacturer for more specific information.
Check that the FR Privacy App feature for a device specific Kill Switch is not set for the device, and if kill switch is setup, then make sure the VPN connection is active.

VPN Killswitch for Asus Merlin

Once you have OpenVPN connected on your Merlin FlashRouter you can enable the VPN Killswitch so that no internet traffic passes through your router that is not encrypted by the VPN tunnel.

1. Under Advanced Settings select VPN.

3. Set Killswitch – Block routed clients if tunnel goes down to Yes.

Changing the VPN protocol your ExpressVPN FlashRouter is using can help with obtaining faster speeds while connected to VPN and connectivity issues in some regions of the world. A great advantage of using ExpressVPN firmware is the ability to use multiple protocols such as OpenVPN, IKEv2, and ExpressVPN’s own protocol Lightway.

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Login with your ExpressVPN FlashRouter admin password.

4. Select VPN Options on the left hand side of the menu.

5. Select VPN Preferences on the left hand side of the menu.

6. Choose the VPN protocol that best suits your needs. We typically see the fastest speeds while using the Lightway – UDP or IKEv2 protocols. Click Save.

7. Click OK and then select Dashboard.

8. Click Disconnect to turn the VPN connection off.

9. Click Connect to turn the VPN connection back on so it is using the new Protocol you selected.

How to fix an Unidentified Network or Limited Connection.

There are several common reasons that an Unidentified Network or Limited connection message may appear in your device’s network adapter.

Wire the FlashRouter correctly for Internet access. Incorrect wiring is the most common cause of this issue. Make sure you are not wired into the FlashRouter WAN port for access, and make sure the FlashRouter is wired correctly to your main modem or router.
Check that your connected device does not have static settings configured.
Disable and reenable the wireless and/or ethernet adapter on your computer to refresh the network.
Make sure you are not connected to multiple router networks at the same time, via WiFi and wired connection simultaneously.

Privacy Hero Streaming Relocation

Your Privacy Hero router uses Cloud Based router management which means you can access the router settings from anywhere on any device that has an internet connection. You can follow these steps while connected to your phone, other Wi-Fi network, or the Privacy Hero network.

Use these steps change your location for popular streaming services allowing you to access to regionally restricted content. Privacy Hero uses DNS routing to change your location which is a great way around VPN streaming blocks.

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

3. Click the Streaming symbol.

4. Set the Streaming Relocation toggle to On.

5. Click the flag of the country you would like the listed streaming service to use.

This streaming relocation feature will not change your IP address in the way that a VPN does. This is why it is not able to be blocked in the same way that a VPN connection can be.

The listed services on the streaming relocation page will not be connected to VPN even if the Privacy Hero has an active VPN connection. These services are set to bypass the router’s VPN tunnel to avoid streaming blocks.

Toggling the streaming relocation feature On will also relocate many other streaming services automatically. They will be automatically optimized for the best connection with no manual selection needed for:

StrongVPN WireGuard Setup

DD-WRT Router Setup for StrongVPN WireGuard

StrongVPN Wireguard DD-WRT setup is now officially supported by FlashRouters. Follow the steps below to gather all the required information to complete your Wireguard router setup.

Navigate to Security > Firewall

Set SPI Firewall to Disable.

Wireless Client Bridge Setup on FlashRouter DD-WRT - Disable Firewall

Click Save at the bottom of the page.

Select your actual time zone for you physical location from the dropdown and enter 1.pool.ntp.org in the Server IP/Name dropdown.

Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page.

Preparing for StrongVPN WireGuard Setup

Obtain your StrongVPN WireGuard Information

If you are not already a StrongVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the StrongVPN website.

2. Select Router icon as the Platform

Select Router for StrongVPN WireGuard Platform

3. Select the Advanced Options dropdown and then check Exclude LAN Traffic and set any value between 52000 and 60000 in the Custom Port field.

4. Select the Server Location from the dropdown that you would like to connect to.

5. Select the Generate at the bottom of the page.

6. Click the DD-WRT installer script box to copy.

Enter StrongVPN WireGuard Script

Navigate to Administration > Commands

Paste the StrongVPN Script that was copied in the empty Commands Shell.

Delete the very last line sleep 8 && reboot.

Click Save Custom (or Save Custom Script may appear depending on your firmware build, they are the same thing)

Copy the line below and paste into the empty Commands Shell.

sh /tmp/.rc_custom

Click Run Commands.

Wait two minutes and then power the FlashRouter off and back on. Reconnect to the FlashRouter’s network when it has booted back up.

Verify a successful StrongVPN WireGuard connection

Navigate to Setup > Tunnels

You should now see that page filled in with WireGuard info.
Visit StrongVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Back up your settings

Navigate to Administration > Backup
