PPPoE Internet Setup

Most ISPs do not require PPPoE credentials. If you are certain this is an ISP requirement in your setup, we kindly ask that you get in touch with your ISP to verify that they do in fact require PPPoE authentication and to provide you with the correct credentials to enter into your FlashRouter.

Before you enter your PPPoE credentials, you should have already setup your FlashRouter in a Single Router Setup with correct wiring. Once you enter PPPoE credentials you should then be able to connect to the internet.

If you are using a Dual Router Setup there is no need to enter PPPoE credentials if they are already entered in the existing router. You can disregard this article.

Enter your PPPoE credentials

DD-WRT Firmware

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Settings - Enter PPPOE Username and Password

Set the Connection Type dropdown to PPPoE.
Enter your ISP assigned PPPoE username and password.
Click Apply Settings.

Power cycle your network devices

Power off your ISP modem and the FlashRouter.
Power on the ISP modem and wait for it to fully boot up.
Power on the FlashRouter.

Verify a successful Internet connection

Once the FlashRouter is booted up connect one of your devices to the FlashRouter via Ethernet or Wireless.

Visit any website and make sure the page fully loads. Once you have verified a successful Internet connection, begin connecting your network devices to the FlashRouter via wired or WiFi.

Please be aware that our support is not able to replicate PPPoE issues on our end, which makes them challenging to troubleshoot. In the event of an issue we recommend using a Dual Router Setup.

How do I save and load a backup file?

Why should I save a backup file?

Save a backup file of your correctly configured DD-WRT settings to ensure you can load the working settings in a few simple clicks instead of manually configuring each setting in the event of a reset.

Save a backup file

Navigate to Administration > Backup

Click Backup and save / download the file.
Name the backup file “FlashRouter Backup”

Load a backup file

Navigate to Administration > Backup

Click Choose File and find the backup file you previously saved.
Click Restore.

NordVPN Setup Guide for Privacy Hero

Your Privacy Hero NordVPN Router uses cloud-based management, which means you can securely access and adjust your router settings from anywhere, on any device with an internet connection. Whether you’re connected through your phone, another Wi-Fi network, or directly to the Privacy Hero network, setup and management are always within reach.

Follow the steps below to connect your Privacy Hero to NordVPN NordLynx or OpenVPN servers. By default, you’ll automatically connect to the fastest, most reliable server available based on your location. If you prefer, you can also select a specific country server and input it directly into your Privacy Hero for more control.

NordVPN Nordlynx Setup for Privacy Hero

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

3. Click the VPN symbol.

4. Click the Change button and select NordVPN from the dropdown.

5. Click the Change button and select NordVPN from the dropdown and choose the NordLynx option. Next you will need to obtain your Token.

6. In a new tab login to your NordVPN account and select NordVPN from your list of Services.

7. At the bottom of the page click Get Access token and you will receive a code via email. Enter this code to proceed.

8. After you enter the email code select Generate new token and set it to Doesn’t expire. Copy this token.

9. Paste the token and then Click Save to connect to the server address recommended by NordVPN within your country.

10. To connect to a specific location, click the Country dropdown menu and scroll or type to search from the available options. Choose your preferred country and you will automatically connect to the recommended server within that country at the time. Then click Save.

11. If you prefer to enter a specific server address number click Advanced Options and then type in the NordVPN server you would like to use as shown below e.g. uk1784.nordvpn.com. Then click Save.

Use the NordVPN’s server recommendation tool to select a specific country and receive a recommendation for the fastest server based on your actual location. You can then enter that server in the Privacy Hero settings manually.

12. Your Privacy Hero settings should now show a Connected message, indicating you have successfully signed in to your NordVPN NordLynx VPN server!

NordVPN OpenVPN Setup for Privacy Hero

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Enter your Privacy Hero account email and password. Click Login.

3. Click the VPN symbol.

4. Click the Change button and select NordVPN from the dropdown.

5. Choose the OpenVPN option to connect to OpenVPN servers or to setup a NordVPN Dedicated IP address. Next you will need to obtain your Manual Service credentials.

6. In a new tab login to your NordVPN account and select NordVPN from your list of Services.

7. At the bottom of the page in the Manual Setup section click Setup NordVPN manually then under the Configuration section go to Service credentials. Click Verify email to receive a code via email and enter the code to view and copy your credentials.

8. Enter these credentials into the OpenVPN Username and Password sections in your Privacy Hero and Click Save if you want to connect to the server address recommended by NordVPN within your country.

9. To connect to a specific location, click the Country dropdown menu and scroll or type to search from the available options. Choose your preferred country and you will automatically connect to the recommended server within that country at the time. Then click Save.

10. To connect with a NordVPN Dedicated IP Address or if you prefer to enter a specific server address number click Advanced Options and then type in the NordVPN server you would like to use as shown below e.g. uk1784.nordvpn.com. Then click Save.

11. Your Privacy Hero settings should now show a Connected message, indicating you have successfully signed in to your NordVPN Dedicated IP address or preferred OpenVPN server!

Privacy Hero’s cloud based router settings access makes it so you can change settings while not connected to the Privacy Hero network. Visit the NordVPN IP Check to verify your VPN IP address. If it has not changed be sure to double check that you are indeed connected to the Privacy Hero network.

Keep in mind that the VPN connection will not change the location of the streaming services listed in the Streaming Relocation area of the Privacy Hero settings if the Streaming Relocation feature is Enabled.

What are some extra steps I can take to secure my network?

DD-WRT open source firmware removes many firmware vulnerabilities and backdoor access issues that may cause problems in stock firmware. DD-WRT is also updated more frequently than stock firmware, so be sure to always check with the FlashRouter support team to see which DD-WRT build we recommend for the highest level of security for your router at any time.

Aside from avoiding common issues and flaws with stock firmware, DD-WRT give you more control over the firmware settings and allows you to take some extra steps to really lock down your network security. In this article we highlight additional options for WiFi network security and also preventative measures for remote execution attacks.

Wireless MAC Filtering

Navigate to Wireless > MAC Filter

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Enable MAC Filtering

Set Use Filter to Enable.
Select either Prevent or Permit
- Choose Prevent to add MAC addresses that you don’t want to join your network.
- Choose Permit to add MAC addresses that you do want to join your network, automatically blocking all others.
Select Edit MAC Filter List.
Add the MAC Address of the wireless devices you want to prevent or permit. Be sure to use the xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx format. Hint: You can see a list of connected devices MAC Address by clicking Wireless Client MAC List.
Click Save.
Replicate the steps above for each wireless band.
Click Apply Settings.

Disable Remote Access

Navigate to Services > Services

Set SNMP to Disable – this setting disables Simple Network Management Protocol, which prevents software from polling your network for information about connected devices.
Set SSHd to Disable – disabling the Secure Shell is a simple way to prevent root access and brute force attacks on your network.
Set Telnet to Disable – Telnet is a less secure version of SSH to manage your local router network via command line.
Click Apply Settings.

Navigate to Administration > Management

Access FlashRouters DD-WRT Admin Settings and Disable Remote Access 2

Set Web GUI Management to Disable.
Set SSH Management to Disable.
Set Telnet Management to Disable.
Set Allow Any Remote IP to Enable – Even though this setting is set to Enable there is no remote access because Web GUI Management is already set to Disable.
Click Apply Settings.

Privacy Hero Activation and Setup

Follow this article when you receive your new Privacy Hero router to create your Privacy Hero account, connect your Privacy Hero to the Internet, and customize your network so it is ready to use.

Your Privacy Hero router uses Cloud Based router management which means you can access the router settings from anywhere on any device that has an internet connection. You can follow these steps while connected to your phone or your other Wi-Fi network.

Create your Privacy Hero account

1. From any device that has a browser such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet visit app.privacyhero.com

2. Select Create Account.

3. Enter the Email address you want to set for your Privacy Hero account. This will be your login to the Privacy Hero settings moving forward. Click Create Account.

4. Go to your Email inbox and check for an email from Privacy Hero and click the Confirm email address link. This email may be in your Promotions or Spam inbox if it is not appearing in your main inbox.

5. Enter the password that you want to use for your Privacy Hero account. Be sure to note this in a secure location so you do not forget. Click Submit.

6. You have now created your Privacy Hero account. You will use this login to access the Privacy Hero router settings.

Activate your Privacy Hero Internet and setup Wi-Fi

1. You will then be taken to the Router Activation steps. Connect the ethernet cable that the Privacy Hero came with from an open Ethernet port on your ISP modem or other router to the WAN/Internet (blue) port of the Privacy Hero.

Then power the Privacy Hero device on by connecting the power supply. This is shown in the video on the page as well. Wait about a minute or so for the Privacy Hero router to fully boot up and then click I’m Connected.

2. The next page may say Router Found or ask you to enter the Activation Code. If it asks for the Activation Code that will be the code printed on the bottom of the Privacy Hero. Enter this code and click Next.

3. Set the Wi-Fi name and password for connecting your devices to the Privacy Hero network. Make sure it is not a duplicate name of an existing Wi-Fi network. Click Next.

4. To activate your 1 Year NordVPN code:

Click on Claim NordVPN 1 Year Code Now

Go to the Account section of your router settings.

Copy the NordVPN code shown under Claim NordVPN 1 Year Code.

Go to the NordVPN activation page.

This code can be used with a new or existing NordVPN account.

5. You are now all set to begin joining your devices to the new Privacy Hero network with the Wi-Fi name and password you entered and setting up some of the Privacy Hero features.

SmartDNSProxy SmartDNS Setup

SmartDNSProxy offers a SmartDNS service for unblocking geo-restricted content without the encryption of a VPN service. SmartDNS routes DNS servers to different regions which “tricks” the website to allow access to previously restricted content.

SmartDNS does not change your IP Address or provide the encryption that a VPN connection does. This can result in faster speeds and unblocked content.

SmartDNS and VPN should not be configured at the same time. When using a SmartDNS connection, make sure to disable your VPN connection on the FlashRouter.

Register your IP Address

If you are not already a SmartDNSProxy user Sign Up Now.

Click on Sign Up and fill in the requested information.

Access the e-mail you entered and Verify your new account.

Getflix SmartDNS Setup

Login to Getflix

If you are not already a Getflix user Sign Up Now.

Visit Getflix’s DNS servers list page and note the DNS servers of the location you would like to access content from.

Enter Getflix SmartDNS servers on your FlashRouter

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Scroll down to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP).
Enter in any combination of Getflix SmartDNS servers you noted into Static DNS fields 1 and 2.
Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page.
Reboot the FlashRouter.

Register your IP Address

When the router is fully booted back up visit your Getflix user dashboard and make sure your IP Address is registered with Getflix. If it is not click Force IP Update.

IPVanish AsusWRT OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for IPVanish AsusWRT Setup

Download your IPVanish .ovpn file

If you are not already an IPVanish user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the IPVanish website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to IPVanish .ovpn file page.

3. Click on the .ovpn file for the server location you want to use to dowloand the .ovpn file. Do not open this file.

AsusWRT Router Setup for IPVanish

Login to AsusWRT firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the AsusWRT FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Fusion tab.

3. Click Add profile.

4. In the Connection Name field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here. Our example server was in New York so I have entered in IPVanish New York.

5. In the VPN Type dropdown select OpenVPN.

6. Click Import .ovpn file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

7. In the Username and Password fields paste in the IPVanish email and password you use to successfully login to your IPVanish website account.

8. Click Apply and Enable at the bottom of the page.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the OpenVPN Client profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network click into the profile and disable Apply to all devices. Then click Devices and select the devices that you want to connect to VPN.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful IPVanish connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit IPVanish’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

In some cases you may notice that the location is not showing the same location as the server you have input in your router settings; this is because geo tracking tools are often tricked by VPN connections. As long as you see an IP address that is not the same as your normal Internet IP address then you are indeed connected to IPVanish.

How to change the IPVanish server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

Surfshark AsusWRT WireGuard Setup

Preparing for Surfshark AsusWRT Setup

Copy your Surfshark Private Key

If you are not already a Surfshark user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the Surfshark website.

2. Click VPN Manual Setup.

3. Select Router as the Setup method.

4. Select WireGuard as the Protocol.

5. Select I don’t have a key pair.

6. Enter FlashRouter as the name of the connection and click Next.

7. Click Generate a new key pair.

8. A Public Key and Private Key will then appear. Use the copy box to copy the Private Key. You will not need the public key.

AsusWRT Router Setup for Surfshark

Login to AsusWRT firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the AsusWRT FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Fusion tab.

3. Click Add profile.

4. In the Connection Name field enter in Surfshark.

5. In the VPN Type dropdown select Surfshark.

6. In the Region dropdown select the Surfshark location you want to connect to.

7. In the Private Key field paste in the Surfshark Private Key obtained earlier.

8. Click Apply and Enable at the bottom of the page.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the Surfshark profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network click into the profile and disable Apply to all devices. Then click Devices and select the devices that you want to connect to VPN.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful Surfshark connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit Surfshark’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the Surfshark server

Use the profile service state toggle to disconnect the currently connected location.
Then click into the Surfshark profile in the router’s settings.
Then adjust the Region dropdown to a new location.
Click Apply all settings.
Use the profile service state toggle to connect the new location.

NordVPN Merlin OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Merlin Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

1. There are two options for obtaining the .ovpn file. The first and recommended is to navigate to NordVPN’s server recommendation page. Click Recommended Server to display the fastest server based on your actual location. You can adjust the country if you don’t want to connect to the recommended country.

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

The second method to obtain a server is for connecting to a specific server number that you know you want to use. This applies to NordVPN Dedicated IP servers if you are signed up for that service. Go to NordVPN’s .ovpn file page. Then search for the server number that you want to use and click Download UDP.

Merlin Router Setup for NordVPN

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here. Our example server was in us5835.nordvpn.com so I have entered in NordVPN us5835.

6. Set Accept DNS Configuration to Strict. Set Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel to Yes (all). Set Kill Switch to Yes or No depending on if you want the Internet to be killed if the VPN connection drops.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the OpenVPN Client profile you are setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network please set the Redirect Internet traffic through tunnel to VPN Director. Then complete the instructions on this page and then view our VPN Director guide.

7. Enter your NordVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your NordVPN email login and password.

8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

IPv6 Internet Setup

Most ISPs only support IPv4. Unless your ISP supports IPv6 then enabling it on the FlashRouter will not enable it across your network.

For most VPN users IPv6 should remain disabled as the VPN connection was designed to operate under IPv4 addresses only. Enabling IPv6 in this instance may compromise the security of the VPN tunnel.

We typically only recommend enabling IPv6 if you are not using VPN or if your VPN provider requires that IPv6 be enabled.

Enable IPv6

Navigate to Setup > IPv6

Set IPv6 to Enable.
Select Native IPv6 from ISP in the dropdown.
If you have specific IPv6 DNS servers you would like to add you can add them in the Static DNS fields or leave those fields blank.
Click Apply Settings.

Power cycle your FlashRouter

Power your FlashRouter off and then power it back on by unplugging and then plugging it back in or using the button on the back of the FlashRouter.

Verify a successful IPv6 connection

Once the FlashRouter is finished powering back up, connect one of your devices to the FlashRouter via Ethernet or Wireless.

Visit http://ipv6-test.com/ where you should see Supported under IPv6 connectivity if your ISP supports IPv6 and your modem is setup to passthrough IPv6.

Please be aware that we can not replicate ISP specific IPv6 issues, which makes them challenging to troubleshoot. We recommend contacting your ISP as the first step of troubleshooting.

NordVPN Asus AX1800S OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN Asus AX1800S Setup

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

You should now see a check mark in the Connection Status area.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the NordVPN server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.
Be sure to deactivate a previously active connection before activating the new one. You do not want to connect to two at the same time.

Parental Controls on Roqos

The Roqos Core includes a suite of user access settings which can be used as Parental Controls.
You can create individual user profiles and assign specific devices. Using these profiles you can restrict access, block certain content, or even monitor internet usage if you choose to do so.

Create User Profiles

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS.
Select the ADD USER button at the top of the menu.
Create a name to identify the user. You may also add a photo or picture to associate with this user however this is optional.
Select the SAVE button at the bottom of the menu.

Assign Devices

Once you have created a user, you must assign one or more devices to the user.
Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.

Select DEVICES.
Select ADD DEVICE.

The ADD DEVICES menu lists all devices which are currently or previously connected to the Roqos. You cannot assign a device to a user unless it has been connected to the Roqos.
Use the check box to select one or more devices and then select the SAVE button to assign the device to the user.

A device can only be assigned to one user. Access restrictions you place on a user such as scheduled internet access or content restriction will apply to all devices assigned to that user regardless of who in your home is actually using the device at that time.

Turn Off Internet Access

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu
Use the PAUSE button next to the user’s name to halt all internet access to the devices assigned to this user. Conversely, you can restore internet access by pushing the PLAY button here as well.

Schedule Internet Access

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
Select SCHEDULE PAUSES. You can create multiple schedules for each user to pause their internet access on a daily recurring basis for every day of the week.

Enable Content Filters

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
Select FILTER. Use existing category and content filters provided by Roqos and customize with your own blocked and allowed site lists.
Select SAVE.

Monitor Internet Usage

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
Select USAGE HISTORY. Access usage data for all devices assigned to this user. This includes websites visited and activity times.

Please note that in order to collect device information, you must enable this functionality on your Roqos. It is disabled by default.

Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select ADVANCED SETTINGS.
Select MISCELLANEOUS.
Activate the COLLECT USER INTERNET USAGE and COLLECT DEVICE DATA USAGE options.

ProtonVPN Merlin WireGuard Setup

Preparing for ProtonVPN Merlin Setup

Download your ProtonVPN .conf file

If you are not already an ProtonVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the ProtonVPN website.

2. Click Downloads.

3. Scroll down to WireGuard configuration and name the device FlashRouter.

4. Select Router as the platform.

5. Select the VPN options that best fit your needs. We typically use the settings as seen in the screenshot here if you are unsure.

6. Next select the server that you would like to connect to and click Create. At the top of the page you’ll see ProtonVPN’s recommended server which we recommend using unless you need to connect to a specific location.

If you need a specific server location find it in the list and click Create.

7. After clicking Create a new window will appear. Click Download to download the .conf file to your computer.

Merlin Router Setup for ProtonVPN

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Select WireGuard as the VPN Protocol.

4. Click Choose file and select the .conf file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this WireGuard Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location here. Our example server was in US-NY#61 so I have entered in ProtonVPN NY-61.

6. Set Enable WireGuard to Yes.

7. Click Apply at the bottom of the page and you should then see a Connected message appear.

8. By default no devices are assigned to the new active WireGuard connection profile. Click the VPN Director tab to assign specific devices to the new WireGuard profile. Your IP will not be changed on your devices yet.

9. On the VPN Director page click the + symbol next to Add new rule.

10. Select the new WireGuard profile in the Interface dropdown.

11. In the Local IP field enter in 192.168.50.0/24 if you want ALL devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network to use the WireGuard VPN connection. Click OK.

If you only want certain devices to connect to the WireGuard Client profile you have setting up instead of all the devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network please complete the instructions on our VPN Director guide.

12. Then click Apply at the bottom of the page.

Verify a successful ProtonVPN connection

Visit ProtonVPN’s IP Check from a private/incognito browsing window to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the ProtonVPN server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .conf file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

ExpressVPN/Aircove FlashRouter Internet Setup and Activation

Follow this article when you receive your new ExpressVPN FlashRouter to connect your FlashRouter to the Internet via ExpressVPN and customize your network so it is ready to use.

Obtain your ExpressVPN Activation Code

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit ExpressVPN’s website login page.

2. Copy your ExpressVPN Activation code and paste it into a document or leave this page open while you proceed with the instructions.

Access Router Settings

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

The wireless network will appear as “Aircove”, “Linksys##”, “Netgear##”, or “Asus” and the password to join the network will be the default wireless password printed on the bottom of the router.

2. Open your web browser and enter expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1 in the URL.

3. Click Get Started on the ExpressVPN page that is displayed.

4a. If your FlashRouter is wired to the Internet correctly then you will be prompted to enter your ExpressVPN Activation Code found in your ExpressVPN account. Paste that in and click Sign in to ExpressVPN.

4b. If your FlashRouter is not wired correctly or is not receiving Internet properly make sure you are wired as detailed in the diagram that appears. If you are stuck at this screen we recommend powering off your ISP modem and any other router that the ExpressVPN FlashRouter is wired to and then powering them back up one by one.

Proceed with step “4a” above once the router is receiving Internet and you are prompted to enter the Activation Code.

5. Select if you want to share anonymous crash report data with ExpressVPN to help them improve the firmware for future releases.

6. Set the WiFi name and password your wireless devices will use to connect to the FlashRouter’s network. Make sure the WiFi name is unique and not a duplicate of an existing WiFi name if you change it. You can also leave it as the default information if you like. Click Continue.

7. Enter the admin password you will use to access the ExpressVPN router settings. Be sure to TYPE CAREFULLY when setting the admin password as a typo will result in needing to reset the router again. Note this password in a secure location or commit it to memory.

8. Your ExpressVPN FlashRouter is now fully setup!

NordVPN TP-Link OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for NordVPN TP-Link Setup

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already an NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

2. Click NordVPN on the left hand side and then click Setup NordVPN manually.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Download your NordVPN .ovpn file

Then click Show Available Protocols. Click Download Config next to OpenVPN UDP. This will download the .ovpn file to your computer for this server. Do not open this file.

TP-Link Router Setup for NordVPN

1. Navigate to the Advanced tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Check the Enable box next to VPN Client. Then click Save at the bottom of the page.

4. Click the Add button in the Server List area.

Set the VPN Type to OpenVPN.

In the Username and Password fields paste in the NordVPN username and password we obtained earlier.

Click Browse and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Save.

By default no devices will be assigned to the VPN Tunnel. With TP-Link firmware you must manually assign the devices that you want connected to the VPN tunnel. Proceed with the next steps to do so for all devices you want connected to VPN.

6. Click the Add button in the Device List area.

7. A list of devices connected to the FlashRouter’s network will appear. Check the devices that you want to connect to VPN. Then click OK.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit NordVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Why is my DNS showing as 192.168.11.1 on my devices?

When connected to a FlashRouter’s network the DNS settings of the devices will be reporting as 192.168.11.1. This means that the router is handling DNS internally through the servers you have set in the Setup > Basic Setup section of the router. If you did not set any custom DNS here, then you will using your ISP or VPN DNS servers automatically.

You can always customize the DNS servers in the router to your preferred servers and through DNSmasq the router will use 192.168.11.1 to route these servers to your connected devices.

In some instances disabling DNSMasq in the DD-WRT settings can help unblock previously blocked websites while connected to VPN. This will force devices to report the DNS servers set in the router directly as opposed to 192.168.11.1.

Disabling DNSMasq is not recommended unless FlashRouters specifically advises you but we have seen this work for certain VPN providers. To disable the DNSMasq do the following.

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Uncheck Use DNSMasq for DHCP.
Uncheck Use DNSMasq for DNS.
Uncheck DHCP-Authoritative.
Click Save.

Navigate to Services > Services

Set DNSMasq to Disable.
Click Apply Settings.
Reboot router.

PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) TP-Link OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for PIA TP-Link Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

TP-Link Router Setup for PIA

1. Navigate to the Advanced tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Check the Enable box next to VPN Client. Then click Save at the bottom of the page.

4. Click the Add button in the Server List area.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Obtain your ExpressVPN OpenVPN Information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the ExpressVPN website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

4. Click the Server Location that you want to connect to. This will download a .ovpn file to your computer that we will use later on. There is no need to open the file. For this example I have selected New York but feel free to select any server listed there.

Merlin Router Setup for ExpressVPN

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here. Our example server was in New York so I have entered in ExpressVPN New York.

7. Enter your ExpressVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your ExpressVPN email login and password.

8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the ExpressVPN server

Copy the new ExpressVPN server address from the below server list.
Paste the server into the Server Address field.
Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

How do I find my router local IP address?

The Local IP Address is the address that you can use to access a router’s firmware settings. Use the below instructions to find the local IP Address of the router you are connected to.

Make sure you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet or WiFi. Keep in mind these instructions may vary based on your current software version.

Find IP Address in Windows

1. Open the Window search box, and search “command prompt”

2. Type “ipconfig” and press Enter.

3. Your router’s local IP address will be listed next to Default Gateway.

Find IP Address in Apple / Mac

1. Open System Preferences, and select Network.

2. Select the adapter that is connected via ethernet or wireless. This will vary based on your current connection.

3. Select Advanced.

4. Select the TCP/IP tab.

5. Your router’s local IP address will be listed next to Router.

Find IP Address in iOS

1. Open Settings

2. Select WiFi, and select the blue icon next to your current connection.

3. Your router’s local IP address will be listed next to Router.

Find IP Address in Android

1. From the top of the screen, swipe down to display settings.

2. Select WiFi.

4. Click on the gear next to Network Name (note this may be different on varying Android devices)
5. Click Advanced
6. Your router’s local IP address will be listed as the Gateway under Network Details.

Once you have followed these instructions to find the Local IP Address of the router you can enter the Local IP address in your web browsers URL to access the router’s firmware settings.

How do I connect a Wireless Extender to my FlashRouter network?

The settings of your FlashRouter do not need to change to connect an extender to the FlashRouter’s network. Simply access the settings of the extender device and enter the FlashRouter’s wireless network name and the correct wireless password.

The extender will then connect via wireless to the FlashRouter and add wireless range to your network.

To use a DD-WRT router as an extender follow our Advanced Wireless Setup Guides.

It is also easy to setup a Mesh system like Orbi or Velop and send your entire Mesh network through the FlashRouter VPN Network, for a VPN connected Mesh Network.

Simply connect from an open LAN port on your FlashRouter to the WAN port on your Mesh base station and then use your Mesh smart apps to complete the setup from there.

PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) Merlin OpenVPN Setup

Preparing for PIA Merlin Setup

Download your PIA .ovpn file

If you are not already a PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the PIA website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information then go to PIA’s OpenVPN Config Generator.

3. On the OpenVPN Configuration Generator select the following:

OpenVPN Version: OpenVPN 2.4 or newer

Select Platform: Linux

Select Region: Choose the server location you’d like to connect to

Select Port: Typically we recommend UDP/1198 RSA-2048 AES-128-CBC SHA1 for best speeds but feel free to select the one you want to use.

4. Click Generate to download the .ovpn file. Do not open this file once it is downloaded.

Merlin Router Setup for PIA

Login to Asus Merlin firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device connected to the Merlin FlashRouter’s network.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

4. Set Automatic Start at boot time to Yes if you want the VPN connection to begin automatically when the router is powered off and back on.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location here. Our example server was in US East Streaming so I have entered in PIA US East Streaming.

7. Enter your PIA account username and password.

8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

9. At the top of the page set the Service State toggle to ON to activate the VPN connection.

Verify a successful PIA connection

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit PIA’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the PIA server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.

You should now see a CONNECTED message.
Visit IPVanish’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

Flint/Slate GL.iNet Repeater Setup

If you want to connect your FlashRouter to the Internet via Wi-Fi instead of an ethernet cable you can setup a FlashRouter as a Wireless Repeater. In Wireless Repeater mode the FlashRouter connects to an available network via WiFi and then creates a completely separate network segment for you.

1. Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to the GL.iNet router via wireless (FlashRouter24 / FlashRouter50) or via ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

The FlashRouter WiFi password is printed on the sheet that came with the router and is set to Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router if you cannot locate the sheet. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Be sure to capitalize the W.

2. Once connected via wireless or ethernet on your device open your browser and go to 192.168.8.1

3. Enter openwrt as the admin password to access the GL.iNet firmware settings.

4. Select the Internet tab.

5. In the Repeater area select Connect.

6. Select the available Wi-Fi network you want the FlashRouter to use for Internet from the list. You can use a 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz network to connect.

7. Enter the correct Wi-Fi password in the Password field for the network you selected. Then click Apply.

8. You are now setup with the GL.iNet FlashRouter receiving Internet via Wi-Fi. The Repeater area should now be filled in with the network information of the connection as shown below.

Obtain your ExpressVPN OpenVPN Information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the ExpressVPN website.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

1. Navigate to the VPN tab.

2. Navigate to the VPN Client tab.

3. Click Add Profile.

4. Click Choose file and select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier. Then click Upload.

5. In the Description field enter in the name you’d like to use for this OpenVPN Client profile. We typically advise entering in the location or server number here.

6. Enter your ExpressVPN username and password that you obtained earlier in the Username and Password. Note that these are different from your ExpressVPN email login and password.

7. Click the Activate button.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

You should now see a check mark in the Connection Status area.
Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP address and virtual location.

How to change the ExpressVPN server

Follow the steps at the top of the page to obtain a new .ovpn file.
Then proceed with the settings same as initial setup.
Be sure to deactivate a previously active connection before activating the new one. You do not want to connect to two at the same time.
