Change WiFi name and password on Asus

Set a custom WiFi network name and password for your devices to join the Asus FlashRouter’s network.

Login to Asus firmware settings in a browser on any computer or smart device.

1. Under General select Network Map.

We typically advise setting different names for each so you can connect your streaming devices to the 5GHz band as that is the faster WiFi band.

Once you have OpenVPN connected on your Merlin FlashRouter you can manage your VPN connections by device or by VPN servers or even VPN providers. This is a major advantage of Asus Merlin firmware as it allows up to 5 VPN connections at the same.

Setup multiple VPN clients

1. Under Advanced Settings select VPN.

2. Click the VPN Client tab.

3. In the Select Client instance dropdown select a new client instance to setup and follow your VPN providers setup guide.

4. Name the client in the Description field for more clarity for which server or provider is being setup.

Start or Stop VPN Client

1. Under Advanced Settings select VPN.

2. Click the VPN Director tab.

3. With multiple VPN clients connected you can start and stop them as needed from this page.

Assign a device to a specific VPN client

1. On the VPN Director page click the + symbol next to Add new rule.

2. Select the Interface that you want to add the device to.

3. Click the Local IP dropdown and a full list of devices connected to the Merlin FlashRouter should appear. Select the device you want to assign to this VPN client.

VPN Killswitch for Asus Merlin

Once you have OpenVPN connected on your Merlin FlashRouter you can enable the VPN Killswitch so that no internet traffic passes through your router that is not encrypted by the VPN tunnel.

3. Set Killswitch – Block routed clients if tunnel goes down to Yes.

DNS Setup for Asus Merlin

Enter custom DNS servers in your Asus Merlin firmware to avoid using your ISP DNS, which will steal and collect your browsing data.

3. In the DNS Server 1 and DNS Server 2 fields enter the DNS server that you wish to use.

Separate your WiFi 2.4GHz and 5GHz Merlin networks

Change your Merlin FlashRouter’s WiFi Network Name to different names for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands so they can be joined separately.

Obtain your NordVPN manual Username and Password

If you are not already a NordVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Log in to your account on the NordVPN website.

3. Enter in the verification code that was sent to your email.

4. Copy and paste your NordVPN manual username and password to a secure location. This is the username and password you will enter into the router settings to connect to NordVPN.

Connecting to NordVPN in the Roqos Core

Access the Roqos Core UI

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

4. In the Connect dropdown choose 3rd Party VPN Providers and for the VPN Provider dropdown choose NordVPN.

Enter your NordVPN information

In the Username and Password field enter the NordVPN OpenVPN Username and Password that you obtained.

Select a NordVPN server

Navigate to NordVPN server recommendation page. Click Recommended server and select the country you want to connect to and note the server number that appears.

Click the Location dropdown and type in or scroll to the preferred server country.

Connect to NordVPN

Once you click Save you will be returned to the VPN OUT menu.

Click the Connect button to start your NordVPN connection. Please be patient as the router connects your entire network through VPN.

Assign devices to connect to VPN

By default there are no devices assigned to the VPN tunnel. Click Included Devices. From this page you can choose if all devices should connect to NordVPN or only certain devices.

From the dropdown select Include all devices if you want every device that connects to the Roqos to connect to NordVPN. Then click Save.

If you only want specific devices to connect to NordVPN while others bypass the VPN connection select Include selected devices from the dropdown and then toggle the sliders for the devices you want connected to VPN. Click Save.

Verify a successful NordVPN connection

Make sure you are connected to the Roqos network via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device.

Visit NordVPN’s website to verify your new IP Address and Protected Status at the top of the page.

You should see Connected at the top of the page underneath NordVPN.

Connect to a different NordVPN server

To change your server click Disconnect on the VPN OUT page then return to the Connect To section to select a new server from the Server dropdown and click Save. Now click Connect once again on the VPN Out page.

Preparing for PIA Setup

Obtain your PIA login information

If you are not already an PIA user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit PIA’s website login page.

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

4. In the Connect dropdown choose 3rd Party VPN Providers and for the VPN Provider dropdown choose Private_Internet_Access.

In the Username and Password field enter the PIA Username and Password that you logged in with.

Click the Server dropdown and type in or scroll to your preferred server location.

Once you click Save you will be returned to the VPN OUT menu.

Verify a successful PIA connection

Make sure you are connected to the Roqos network via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device.

Visit PIA’s IP Check to verify your new IP Address and virtual location.

You should see Connected at the top of the page underneath Private_Internet_Access.

Connect to a different PIA server

To change your server click Disconnect on the VPN OUT page then return to the Connect To section to select a new server from the Server dropdown and click Save. Now click Connect once again on the VPN Out page.

Set a Static IP for your connected devices on Roqos

By assigning specific Static IP addresses to your devices you can better manage your network and make sure they connect with the same Local IP Address each time they connect to your Roqos.

1. Click the navigation menu and select Basic Settings > LAN Settings.

4. Toggle the device hat you want to set a Static IP for and then enter 192.168.23.x with x being any number between 2 and 254. Click Save.

Now, every time the device connects to the Roqos network it will be assigned the same Static IP address on the Local network.

Setting up a Guest WiFi Network on Roqos

Create a Guest WiFi network on your Roqos to segment certain devices from the main network and set custom content filters as you see fit. Note that this is only for 2.4GHz wireless.

4. Optional: If you wish to set specific Content Filters for the Guest Network and set the Filters that you see fit.

Change your Roqos’ WiFi Network Name and Password to anything you like. Make sure it is not a duplicate of an existing WiFi name.

Why can’t I send emails while connected to VPN?

Can’t send or receive emails? Connecting to a VPN server can result in your email client not being able to send or receive emails. This can happen for several reasons:

  • The VPN provider you are connected to is blocking the ports the email client is using (SMTP).
  • Your email service is blocking access to datacenter IPs
  • Your email service is only allowing access to residential IPs
  • Your email service is only allowing access to IPs of its own country
  • Your email service is only allowing access to certain ISPs

This issue will only occur with email client applications and not with web browser email.

Steps to take if your email is not working

Change SMTP port

Access the settings of your email client and change the SMTP port to 587 or 465.

Change the VPN server

Connect to a different VPN server. The process for changing servers is detailed in your provider’s setup instructions.

What is a DNS leak and how can I prevent a DNS leak in my router?

What is a DNS leak?

A DNS Leak is an instance where your ISP receives DNS requests despite being connected to a VPN tunnel.

How do I check if my DNS is leaking?

  1. Perform the extended test on DNSLeakTest.com. Be sure to do so on multiple web browsers for best accuracy.
  2. Here you should only find one server and your ISP should not be listed as your actual ISP.
  3. If your actual ISP is not listed there is no DNS leak.

How can I prevent a DNS leak in DD-WRT?

Check your device's browser settings

Updates to web browsers have added DNS settings capabilities, while this often makes your browsing experience more secure it can also effect the results of a DNS leak test. You can go into your browser’s settings and search for “DNS” and disable the DNS of the browser for more accurate DNS leak test results.

A simple web search for “DNS settings [browser name]” should return helpful information for finding the setting in your browser.

Adjust DD-WRT settings

1. On the Setup > Basic Setup page of the DD-WRT settings check the Ignore WAN DNS box.

This setting may not appear in older DD-WRT firmware builds. If it is not appearing for you, upgrade your DD-WRT firmware.

2. Lower on the same page check the Forced DNS Redirection box.

3. Click Apply Settings at the bottom of the page and then wait a full minute and power the FlashRouter off and back on. Reconnect to the FlashRouter’s network once it boots back up and then make sure you are connected to VPN by going to https://whatismyipaddress.com then perform the DNS leak test again.

Adding your VPN provider’s DNS servers to the router’s configuration can be helpful as well. The DNS servers are typically found on the VPN provider’s website or you can reach out to their team for a recommendation of what DNS servers to enter.

My VPN stopped working on my FlashRouter.

The VPN connection on the FlashRouter will not drop in most instances however if the VPN stopped working follow the steps below.

In order to use the FlashRouters Privacy App you need DD-WRT build 02/15/22 r48362 or 2/10/20 r42335.

Follow these instructions to upgrade the firmware to 02/15/22 r48362: How do I upgrade the DD-WRT firmware of my FlashRouter?

If you would like the fully featured FR Privacy App version with Simple Setup you must use firmware builds from 2/10/20 r42335.

Navigate to Status > MyPage

  1. If MyPage is not properly loading the FlashRouters Privacy App try reinstalling the FlashRouters Privacy App.
  2. With the Auto Connect to VPN box checked simply power off the FlashRouter and power it back on to connect back to VPN.
  3. Verify that you have the correct settings entered for your provider. A change in the user information used to authenticate the VPN connection will cause a disconnect.
  4. Try a different VPN server location.
  5. If applicable, switch from UDP to TCP or vice versa.
  6. Make sure that you have any VPN/proxy apps and extensions turned off on all devices connected to the FlashRouter.

  1. Verify that you have the correct settings entered for your provider. A change in the user information used to authenticate the VPN connection will cause a disconnect.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Apply Settings.
  3. Try a different VPN server location.
  4. If applicable, switch from UDP to TCP or vice versa. Check your VPN provider’s website to see if the port needs to change with the protocol.
  5. Make sure that you have any VPN/proxy apps and extensions turned off on all devices connected to the FlashRouter.

Why is my connection speed slower?

The encryption provided by a VPN connection almost always results in slower connection speed. In some cases you may have noticed that your computer or tablet was working faster when running a VPN client application or program, that is because a computer has a processor that is normally about 4-6x times as strong as a the processor on a router, and that is for managing a single VPN connection. A router has a smaller processor and is managing an entire network of devices. Encrypting an entire network does take considerable processing power.

Speed test results while connected to VPN are never going to be accurate. A speed test measures the rate at which a data packet travels from one server to another, however when you are connecting to VPN the data packets travel to an extra server where they are encrypted and then sent back into the route. We strongly recommend disabling the FlashRouter’s VPN connection when testing speeds to make sure there isn’t and issue with the router.

Connection Types

Ethernet: Wired ethernet connections will almost always be the most stable and reliable connection. To speed up your internet connection, use an ethernet cable to wire your devices to the FlashRouter.

Wireless (5.0GHz): The 5.0GHz WiFi frequency has less range than the standard 2.4GHz WiFi, but also transmits your internet connection at a significantly faster speed. If you were previously using the 2.4GHz network and experiencing slow speeds please connect to the 5GHz wireless network which should improve your speed.

Connect to the closest VPN server

Our supported VPN providers offer many servers in different countries and regions. If a server has slower connection speed we recommend connecting to the server closest to your actual location.

Why are streaming services blocked while connected to VPN?

Streaming services and VPN

Most popular streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime block incoming VPN connections. This does not mean the VPN is not working, it simply means they have recognized you are connecting to a VPN server and filtered that server from being able to stream.

Below are several options for you to follow if you encounter this issue while connected to a VPN on your FlashRouter.

VPN provider server recommendation

Contact your VPN provider for a server recommendation that is not blocked by popular streaming services. Be sure to mention that you are connecting to VPN via a router instead of the computer client. If your VPN provider does not have a helpful suggestion or server recommendation please try the below options or contact us for a solution.

Bypass VPN by device

The FlashRouters Privacy App has a VPN bypass by device feature that can be used on devices dedicated to streaming.

Use SmartDNS

If access to streaming services not in your region is a higher priority for you then VPN encryption we recommend using a SmartDNS service on your FlashRouter to access the content you desire.

Changing VPN providers on your FlashRouter has never been easier thanks to the FlashRouters Privacy App. There are currently more than 25 VPN providers to choose from in the default FR App installation.

Access the FR Privacy App and then pop out the FlashRouters Privacy App logo in the navigation area and make sure you are on the Connect page.

VPN connection logs can be very helpful for troubleshooting if you have a connection issue. These are not logs of your VPN activity but rather logs that will report errors for connection failures to your VPN service provider.

Access the FR Privacy App and then pop out the FlashRouters Privacy App logo in the navigation area and make sure you are on the Connect page.

Scroll down and click Logs at the bottom of the page.

Within the Logs area you can take several actions.

  1. Kill – This is another way to disconnect from VPN.
  2. Reset – This will revert all changes you have made to the FR Privacy App on the Connect and Options pages. If you reset you will need to select your VPN provider, enter login info, etc…
  3. Reload – Refresh the readouts of logs if you are in the middle of attempting a connection.
  4. Download – Save logs to your computer as a text file.
  5. Copy – Copy logs directly to your clipboard without saving to your computer.

Global Kill Switch is a very important feature if you want to keep your internet connection secure at all times, even in the rare case that your VPN connection unexpectedly drops for any reason at any time.

By enabling Kill Switch this will block internet access entirely if the VPN disconnects, and the internet will only be accessible again once the VPN connection starts up again.

Access the FR Privacy App and then pop out the FlashRouters Privacy App logo in the navigation area and make sure you are on the Connect page.

Check Global Kill Switch to have your FlashRouter disconnect from the internet if the VPN connection drops.

Uncheck this box to stay connected to the internet if the VPN is disconnected.

Feature alert! Kill Switch by device is available in the Options page of the FR Privacy App if you would like certain devices to be able to access the internet without VPN. If you want to use Kill Switch by device then you must first disable Global Kill Switch.

Check the Auto Connect to VPN box so that anytime you reboot the FlashRouter, the FR Privacy App VPN connection will start up automatically with the internet.

Access the FR Privacy App and then pop out the FlashRouters Privacy App logo in the navigation area and make sure you are on the Connect page.

Check the Auto Connect to VPN to have your FlashRouter connect to VPN when it boots up. This is assuming you have internet on the FlashRouter and you have entered valid VPN connection information into your Privacy App settings.

Update the Privacy App to make sure your FlashRouter’s VPN connection is stable and secure with all the latest FR App features. Updates are made on our end when new features and new VPN servers are added or possible bugs are fixed.

Access the FR Privacy App and then pop out the FlashRouters Privacy App logo in the navigation area and make sure you are on the Options page.

If an update is available for the FlashRouters Privacy App you can click the Update button that appears at the bottom of the page.

Once the page reloads you can verify the latest App version by going to the Logs section at the bottom of the Connect page and checking that the “installed app version” matches the “latest app version”. Please note this image is a sample view and may not represent the latest FR App version.

Anytime you reboot a FlashRouter with the FR App installed, the App will also automatically update to the latest version.

How Do I Use A Personal and Work VPN Simultaneously?

With many people working from home these days, connecting to VPN for work and while keeping your home devices secured through your FlashRouter’s VPN network is often required. Since it is not recommended and often not possible to “stack”, or connect a device that is already connected to a VPN tunnel to a second VPN, we recommend using the FlashRouters Privacy App’s Policy routing by device feature to bypass the FlashRouter’s VPN connection on your work computer.

You will then be able to connect to your work VPN without issue as well as keep all of your other devices secured by the FlashRouter’s VPN network.
