Select devices for VPN on Roqos

Select specific devices that you want to pass through the Roqos Core’s VPN tunnel. This is a great solution in instances of streaming services blocking incoming VPN connections or other VPN related service interruptions.

Login to Roqos Core UI web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

1. Click the navigation menu and select VPN  > VPN Out.

2. Select Included Devices.

3. In the Select devices for your VPN Out connection dropdown select Include selected devices and check the devices you want to connect to VPN. Click Save.

Now these devices will be connected to the VPN tunnel. All other devices will bypass the VPN tunnel and use your ISP’s IP Address.

VPN Kill Switch on Roqos

The VPN Kill Switch disables the Internet connection on your Roqos Core in the even that your VPN disconnects. Internet access of all your devices will be blocked when the kill switch is enabled – except for the ones you have excluded from VPN Out.

Managing User Profiles on Roqos

User Profiles allow you to organize your devices connected to the Roqos Core. This allow you to see a user profile’s usage history, set a schedule when devices are allowed to connect to the Internet, and filter out specific content such as explicit websites and games.

Login to Roqos Core UI web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

Adding new User Profile

1. Click the navigation menu and select Users.

2. To add a new User Profile click Add User.

3. In the Name field enter the name for the User Profile. You can add an image for the User Profile here as well.

4. You will see a list of devices connected to the Roqos Core at the bottom of the page. Check the box of the devices that you would like to add to this User Profile. Then click Save.

Tracking Usage History

1. Click the User Profile that you want to review.

2. Select Usage History.

3. On the new page you can view usage by Top Visited, All Activity, and Activity Graph.

Schedule Pauses

1. Click the User Profile that you want to review.

2. Select Scheduled Pauses.

3. Click Add Schedule.

4. From here you can set the name of the schedule, the days that the schedule will be in effect, and if the schedule should be applied all day or during specific hours. Click Save.

Filters

1. Click the User Profile that you want to review.

2. Select Filters.

3. From here you can use the toggle to Block explicit websites and Block explicit search results.

4. In the Safe Youtube dropdown you can select None, Moderate, or Strict.

5. The Blocked Content area allows you to block specific services such as Games and Social Media.

6. Add specific websites to the Block Sites list if the above policies did not cover them.

7. Add specific websites to the Allowed Sites list if you want to block all websites except for a few.

Cybersecurity and Intrusion Prevention on Roqos

Block Websites by Country on Roqos

Country Block allows you to select countries that you identify to be an unsafe and block internet traffic between your network and those countries.

Ad blocking on Roqos

Parental Controls on Roqos

The Roqos Core includes a suite of user access settings which can be used as Parental Controls.
You can create individual user profiles and assign specific devices. Using these profiles you can restrict access, block certain content, or even monitor internet usage if you choose to do so.

Create User Profiles

  1. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS.
  2. Select the ADD USER button at the top of the menu.
  3. Create a name to identify the user. You may also add a photo or picture to associate with this user however this is optional.
  4. Select the SAVE button at the bottom of the menu.

Assign Devices

  1. Once you have created a user, you must assign one or more devices to the user.
  2. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
  3. You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
  1. Select DEVICES.
  2. Select ADD DEVICE.
  1. The ADD DEVICES menu lists all devices which are currently or previously connected to the Roqos. You cannot assign a device to a user unless it has been connected to the Roqos. 
  2. Use the check box to select one or more devices and then select the SAVE button to assign the device to the user.

A device can only be assigned to one user. Access restrictions you place on a user such as scheduled internet access or content restriction will apply to all devices assigned to that user regardless of who in your home is actually using the device at that time.

Turn Off Internet Access

  1. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list
  2. You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu
  3. Use the PAUSE button next to the user’s name to halt all internet access to the devices assigned to this user. Conversely, you can restore internet access by pushing the PLAY button here as well.

Schedule Internet Access

  1. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
  2. You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
  3. Select SCHEDULE PAUSES. You can create multiple schedules for each user to pause their internet access on a daily recurring basis for every day of the week.

Enable Content Filters

  1. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
  2. You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
  3. Select FILTER. Use existing category and content filters provided by Roqos and customize with your own blocked and allowed site lists.
  4. Select SAVE.

Monitor Internet Usage

  1. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select USERS. Choose a user from the list.
  2. You are now in the USER/GROUP PROFILE menu.
  3. Select USAGE HISTORY. Access usage data for all devices assigned to this user. This includes websites visited and activity times.

Please note that in order to collect device information, you must enable this functionality on your Roqos. It is disabled by default.

  1. Using the navigation pane on the left of the screen, select ADVANCED SETTINGS.
  2. Select MISCELLANEOUS.
  3. Activate the COLLECT USER INTERNET USAGE and COLLECT DEVICE DATA USAGE options.

Wireless Repeater – WiFi as WAN on Roqos

WiFi as WAN is a feature of the Roqos software which allows you to use an existing WiFi network as the Internet source for the Roqos router instead of an ethernet cable connection. This is a great solution for travelling users who do not have access to the modem/router in their hotel or AirBnB.

Login to Roqos Core UI web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

1. Click the navigation menu and select Basic Settings > Internet Settings.

2. Click WiFi as WAN.

3. Scroll down and select the existing WiFi network you wish to use for WAN/Internet from the Nearby Wireless Networks list.

4. Enter the correct password for the existing WiFi network and click Connect.

5. Toggle the Enable slide and click Save.

Be patient as the connection is made. It usually takes 30 seconds to a minute to connect. Then test that your Internet is working while connected to the Roqos network.

Preparing for ExpressVPN Setup

Obtain your ExpressVPN login information

If you are not already an ExpressVPN user Sign Up Now.

1. Visit ExpressVPN’s website login page.

2. Successfully log in with your account information. Select More.

3. Select Manual Configuration and copy the Username and Password that are displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

Connecting to ExpressVPN in the Roqos Core

Access the Roqos Core UI

1. Login to the Roqos Core web app in a browser on any computer or smart device.

2. Click VPN from the navigation menu and then click VPN OUT.

4. In the Connect dropdown choose 3rd Party VPN Providers and for the VPN Provider dropdown choose ExpressVPN.

Enter your ExpressVPN information

In the Username and Password field enter the ExpressVPN OpenVPN Username and Password that you obtained.

Select an ExpressVPN server

Click the Server dropdown and type in or scroll to your preferred server location.

Connect to ExpressVPN

Once you click Save you will be returned to the VPN OUT menu.

Click the Connect button to start your ExpressVPN connection. Please be patient as the router connects your entire network through VPN.

Assign devices to connect to VPN

By default there are no devices assigned to the VPN tunnel. Click Included Devices. From this page you can choose if all devices should connect to ExpressVPN or only certain devices.

From the dropdown select Include all devices if you want every device that connects to the Roqos to connect to ExpressVPN. Then click Save.

If you only want specific devices to connect to ExpressVPN while others bypass the VPN connection select Include selected devices from the dropdown and then toggle the sliders for the devices you want connected to VPN. Click Save.

Verify a successful ExpressVPN connection

Make sure you are connected to the Roqos network via WiFi or ethernet connection on your device.

Visit ExpressVPN’s IP Check to verify your new IP Address and virtual location.

You should see Connected at the top of the page underneath ExpressVPN.

Connect to a different ExpressVPN server

To change your server click Disconnect on the VPN OUT page then return to the Connect To section to select a new server from the Server dropdown and click Save. Now click Connect once again on the VPN Out page.

Why can’t I access router settings?

Be sure to first try the preset details to access your FlashRouter’s settings.

First time setup

Are you connected to the FlashRouter's network?

In order to access the FlashRouter’s settings you need to be connected to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet or WiFi.

It is possible that if you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network you device might have static IP settings from a previous connection preventing it from being read correctly. Check your device’s static IP settings before proceeding.

Is your FlashRouter wired correctly?

Your FlashRouter should be wired as detailed in our Connect FlashRouter to the Internet setup.

A common mistake is to connect from your modem or other router to a LAN/numbered port of the FlashRouter instead of the WAN/Internet port of the FlashRouter as it should be. Doing so results in no access to the FlashRouter’s settings.

Lost access

How to find you FlashRouter's Local IP Address?

It is possible that your Local IP Address was changed at some point. Your Local IP Address is the address that you can access the FlashRouter’s settings with. We recommend finding the Local IP Address of the FlashRouter.

Was your FlashRouter reset?

If your FlashRouter is showing a local IP Address of 192.168.1.1 and you are seeing ‘dd-wrt’ as an available network in your wireless networks, your FlashRouter was reset. Reconfigure your FlashRouter.

Keep in mind that seeing a Local IP Address of 192.168.1.1 can also mean your are wired incorrectly and the router has not been reset. Be sure to check your wireless networks for ‘dd-wrt’. If the FlashRouter’s wireless network name appears as it was set then your FlashRouter was not reset and you should see the above section.

Why can't I access my FlashRouter after a firmware upgrade?

When performing a firmware upgrade there is a dropdown that has Don’t Reset or Reset to Default settings as options.

If you accidentally selected Reset to Default settings you will need to reconfigure your FlashRouter.

If you had Don’t Reset selected and are still unable to connect to the FlashRouter’s network after a firmware upgrade, first make sure you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network as WiFi can disconnect during an upgrade, and then Reboot the FlashRouter.

How do I find my router local IP address?

The Local IP Address is the address that you can use to access a router’s firmware settings. Use the below instructions to find the local IP Address of the router you are connected to.

Make sure you are connected to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet or WiFi. Keep in mind these instructions may vary based on your current software version.

Once you have followed these instructions to find the Local IP Address of the router you can enter the Local IP address in your web browsers URL to access the router’s firmware settings.

How do I reset and reconfigure my FlashRouter?

When is a router reset needed?

A reset of the FlashRouter should only be performed in the following instances:

  • You have exhausted all other troubleshooting methods and cannot access your router settings.
  • A backup file was saved of your previously working settings.
  • Username and password to access the FlashRouter’s settings are not working.
  • Power light on the router is blinking steadily.
  • Firmware upgrade was performed with Reset to Default settings selected.

Reset Router

Asus FlashRouters:

  1. While the router is powered off press and hold the WPS button on the back or side of the router. Power up the router while continuing to hold the WPS. Continue to hold for 15 seconds as the router powers on (note this could be up to 45 seconds on some models before lights flash).
  2. You will see the lights on the router flashing steadily and this is how you know you have reset the router.
  3. Let the router sit for about a minute and then reboot the router.

Linksys and Netgear FlashRouters:

  1. While the router is plugged in, find the reset button located on the back of the router. You will need a pin or pencil to hold down the button for 15 seconds.
  2. You will see the lights on the back of the router flash simultaneously and this is how you know you have reset the router.
  3. Let the router sit for about a minute and then reboot the router.

Access Router Settings

1. Connect to the FlashRouter’s network via ethernet cable or wireless.

The wireless network will appear as “dd-wrt” and will likely not require a password to join. If it does require a password to join the password will be the default wireless password found on the bottom of the router.

2. Open your web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL.

3. Delete the dots and enter the new administration login in the Router Username, Router Password, and Re-enter to confirm fields.

TYPE CAREFULLY when setting the administration login as a typo will result in needing to reset the router again.

Change Local IP Address and DNS

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

1. Set the Local IP Address to 192.168.11.1

2. Set the Static DNS 1 to 8.8.8.8

3. Set the Static DNS 2 to 8.8.4.4

4. Set the Static DNS 3 to 208.67.220.220

Navigate to Wireless > Basic Settings

Find your FlashRouter model in the WiFi Setup section and replicate the wireless settings on this page.

Connect to the FlashRouter's network

You will be able to connect to the newly setup wireless network using the details you set. The router will now be accessible at 192.168.11.1

Back up your settings

  1. Click the Backup button.
  2. A file named nvrambak.bin will be saved to your computer.
  3. You can load nvrambak.bin to restore your settings in the event of a reset.

Why is my router not connecting to internet?

Router not connecting to the internet? Follow these simple steps!

  1. Make sure that you are not setting a WAN IP of 0.0.0.0 in the top right corner of your FlashRouter DD-WRT settings. If you do, then make sure your FlashRouter is wired correctly for Internet.
  2. Try power cycling your ISP modem, FlashRouter and any other router that may be in the setup. Power the modem back on first, wait for it to boot up fully, and then power the FlashRouter back on.
  3. Make sure you do not have Global Kill Switch enabled in the FlashRouters Privacy App and if you do make sure your VPN status is Connected.

How to fix an Unidentified Network or Limited Connection.

There are several common reasons that an Unidentified Network or Limited connection message may appear in your device’s network adapter.

  1. Wire the FlashRouter correctly for Internet access. Incorrect wiring is the most common cause of this issue. Make sure you are not wired into the FlashRouter WAN port for access, and make sure the FlashRouter is wired correctly to your main modem or router.
  2. Check that your connected device does not have static settings configured.
  3. Disable and reenable the wireless and/or ethernet adapter on your computer to refresh the network.
  4. Make sure you are not connected to multiple router networks at the same time, via WiFi and wired connection simultaneously.

Why are some of my devices not connecting to the internet?

  1. Make sure you are not using any device VPN device application or proxy on devices that are connected to the FlashRouter’s network as this can cause a conflict. Make sure the FlashRouter’s VPN connection is the only active VPN connection in your network.
  2. Check that static settings are not configured on your device.
  3. Certain devices require port forwarding rules to be properly setup before full connectivity. This may apply to devices like VOIP or smart cameras. If this is the case you may need to contact the manufacturer for more specific information.
  4. Check that the FR Privacy App feature for a device specific Kill Switch is not set for the device, and if kill switch is setup, then make sure the VPN connection is active.

Why is the internet LED red on my router?

Upon flashing the router from stock manufacturer firmware to DD-WRT firmware many buttons and lights on the router may have altered functionality. With DD-WRT firmware on certain devices a red internet/WAN light means a successful connection. While in factory firmware a red light denotes an issue with your internet connection. For anyone with DD-WRT firmware, this is not something you need to worry about as long as the internet functionality is in fact working.

Why is the power light on my FlashRouter blinking?

A slowly blinking power light means that the FlashRouter was somehow put into Rescue/Restore/Recovery Mode. This usually happens if the reset button was held down for too long.

This may also happen if you have incorrectly tried to update the firmware on your FlashRouter. The first thing to try is a simple reboot of the router to see if it exits restore mode.

If a reboot does not clear up the issue then try to reset and reconfigure your FlashRouter.

How do I change my Wireless Password?

Change the FlashRouter’s wireless network password to any password you like.

  1. Click Unmask next to the Shared Key field to see what you are typing and enter in the new wireless password you would like to use.
  2. Click Apply Settings.
  3. Reconnect to the wireless network using your new password.

My WiFi password is not working

Keep in mind that passwords are case sensitive.

The preset DD-WRT FlashRouter WiFi password is Wireless#[First 5 characters of your router MAC]. The router MAC can be found on the bottom of your router. For e.g. if your MAC is 1459C07E70A8 then your WiFi password is Wireless#1459C

Verify wireless password

Connect an ethernet cable from a numbered port on the FlashRouter to a computer and access the FlashRouter’s settings.

Navigate to Wireless > Wireless Security

Check the Unmask box and note the wireless password that is entered.

Make sure that you have WPA2 Personal / AES set as the security settings for all bands. For some router models make sure the CCMP-128 (AES) box is checked for all bands.

Forget network on your device

Wireless devices usually offer a “forget” network feature to remove a wireless network from the saved information of the wireless adapter. If you have updated your WiFi password and are trying to connect on a device that previously used the old WiFi password then removing the wireless network and then trying to connect fresh can help with this issue.

Why did my WiFi SSID change to ‘dd-wrt’?

If you are seeing ‘dd-wrt’ in your available wireless networks instead of your regular FlashRouter24 and FlashRouter50 wireless network names (SSID) this means the router has been reset to default DD-WRT firmware settings.

Follow our instructions for Resetting and Reconfiguring your FlashRouter to get setup again.

Do not confuse your SSID being replaced by ‘dd-wrt’ with ‘dd-wrt vap’ appearing alongside your regular wireless network names.

If you are seeing ‘dd-wrt vap’ it likely means you did not rename your network when attempting to setup a guest network.

How do I boost my Wireless Transmission power?

We advise to proceed with caution when setting the TX Power. This has been known to negatively effect the hardware if set too high.

Why are devices disconnecting from Wireless?

If you find that wireless devices are routinely disconnecting from the FlashRouter’s network we recommend that you do the following:

  1. On the Wireless > Wireless Security page make sure you are using WPA2 Personal / AES as your security settings.
  2. On the Wireless > Basic Settings adjust the Wireless Channel. Select a wireless channel with less interference. The best channel will depend on your wireless environment.

Why is my WiFi signal weak?

If you find that wireless signal strength is weak while connected to the FlashRouter’s network we recommend that you do the following:

  1. Make sure that you have the external antennas fully connected to the FlashRouter.
  2. “Forget” the wireless network on the device and then rejoin with a fresh connection. This will be different for each device but can be effective.
  3. Make sure you are within an appropriate range for the network you are using. Keep in mind that a 2.4GHz network will always have better range than 5GHz networks. Devices further away from the router should use the 2.4GHz network.
  4. Interference from your wireless environment can also cause this issue. On the Wireless > Basic Settings adjust the Wireless Channel for the network you are experiencing the issue for. Channel interference is a likely cause for weak signal strength.

Why can’t I connect to WiFi using the WPS button feature?

DD-WRT firmware automatically disables the WPS feature as it is a known security vulnerability. This makes your router more secure with DD-WRT than with factory firmware.

For any device that uses a WPS WiFi connection there should always be an alternate method to connect the device via WiFi.

How do I connect a Wireless Extender to my FlashRouter network?

The settings of your FlashRouter do not need to change to connect an extender to the FlashRouter’s network. Simply access the settings of the extender device and enter the FlashRouter’s wireless network name and the correct wireless password.

The extender will then connect via wireless to the FlashRouter and add wireless range to your network.

To use a DD-WRT router as an extender follow our Advanced Wireless Setup Guides.

It is also easy to setup a Mesh system like Orbi or Velop and send your entire Mesh network through the FlashRouter VPN Network, for a VPN connected Mesh Network.

Simply connect from an open LAN port on your FlashRouter to the WAN port on your Mesh base station and then use your Mesh smart apps to complete the setup from there.

How do I read my Wireless status?

The wireless status page is very helpful in diagnosing where a wireless issue stems from. Make sure the settings displayed on this page match the actual settings you have set in the DD-WRT Wireless settings. Review our recommended wireless settings for your FlashRouter if you are not getting accurate readouts.

Navigate to Status > Wireless

Interface

Select from the wireless interface that you want to view the readouts for.

MAC Address

Used to identify the wireless interface.

Chipset

Displays the wireless hardware that your FlashRouter uses.

Radio

Should always be set to Radio is On unless you have intentionally disabled the wireless on the FlashRouter. If this is displaying Radio is Off for certain wireless interfaces we recommend adjusting the Wireless Channel on the Wireless > Basic Settings page.

Mode

This should read as AP unless you are using an Advanced Wireless setup such as a Repeater, Client, or Repeater Bridge.

Network

Displays the wireless network mode that you have set for a specific wireless interface.

SSID

Displays the wireless network name that you have set for a specific wireless interface.

Channel

Displays the channel that you have set for a specific wireless interface. If this reads as Unknown it is best to select a new wireless channel or reboot the FlashRouter and check again.

TX Power

Displays the wireless transmit power that you have set for a specific wireless interface. If this reads as Unknown it is best reboot the FlashRouter and check again.

Rate

Displays an approximation of the max wireless speed available on a wireless band.

ACK Timing

Displays the ACK Timing that you have set for a specific wireless interface. If this reads as Unknown it is best reboot the FlashRouter and check again.

Encryption

Should always read as Enabled, WPA2 Personal.

Received (RX)

If this appears as 0% and there are no errors then it means that no devices have connected to the wireless interface yet. If this appears as 0% and the errors match the amount of OK packets you will need to adjust the wireless settings on the Wireless > Basic Settings page.

Transmitted (TX)

If this appears as 0% you will need to adjust the wireless settings on the Wireless > Basic Settings page.
