Global Kill Switch is a very important feature if you want to keep your internet connection secure at all times, even in the rare case that your VPN connection unexpectedly drops for any reason at any time.

By enabling Kill Switch this will block internet access entirely if the VPN disconnects, and the internet will only be accessible again once the VPN connection starts up again.

How Do I Use A Personal and Work VPN Simultaneously?

TeamFlashRouters · Mar 19, 2020 ·

With many people working from home these days, connecting to VPN for work and while keeping your home devices secured through your FlashRouter’s VPN network is often required. Since it is not recommended and often not possible to “stack”, or connect a device that is already connected to a VPN tunnel to a second VPN, we recommend using the FlashRouters Privacy App’s Policy routing by device feature to bypass the FlashRouter’s VPN connection on your work computer.

You will then be able to connect to your work VPN without issue as well as keep all of your other devices secured by the FlashRouter’s VPN network.

How do I set a Static IP for my device in DD-WRT?

TeamFlashRouters · May 30, 2019 ·

It can be very useful to setup static local IP addresses for devices on your FlashRouter network. By assigning specific IP’s to specific devices you can better control and manage how your network and the internet interacts with each device.

Once you setup a static IP you can set access restrictions, monitor and control bandwidth, as well as bypass a router VPN connection or setup a device specific Kill Switch. Without a static IP assignment you may lose device specific settings when the DHCP lease to the router expires.

Navigate to Services > Services

Set Static IP by Device MAC Address in FlashRouter DD-WRT Settings
  1. Under Static Leases click Add once.
  2. Fill in the newly appeared fields.
    • MAC Address: Enter the device’s MAC address which can be found on the device itself or on the Status > LAN page.
    • Hostame: Enter a name for the device. Make sure that there are no spaces.
    • IP Address: Enter the desired static IP Address of the device. It should be on the same subnet as the FlashRouter (192.168.11.x)
    • Client Lease Time: Leave this field blank.
  3. Click Apply Settings
  4. Repeat the steps above for each individual static IP address you would like to setup. If you click Add before clicking Apply Settings you will lose the configuration.

If a device has wireless and ethernet capabilities the MAC Addresses will be different for a wireless connection and an ethernet connection. Make sure to set a static IP for both MAC Addresses in this case.

Make sure you are following the directions below to load the firmware file into the router settings and not trying to open the firmware file on its own.

Access the FlashRouter via wired connection. It is possible to upgrade firmware via WiFi, but this is not recommended unless you are unable to wire directly to the router.

Navigate to Administration > Firmware Upgrade

Firmware Upgrade page in FlashRouter DD-WRT settings
  1. Do NOT select Reset to Default Settings in the dropdown menu as this will erase all of your FlashRouter settings.
NOTE: If you are updating from an older DD-WRT build you may be required to reset the router after a firmware update for new features and UI to properly load. You will then be required to setup the administration username and password along with your WiFi and VPN network settings.
  2. Click Choose File and select the file you have downloaded.
  3. Click Upgrade.

How do I schedule a reboot of my FlashRouter?

TeamFlashRouters · May 30, 2019 ·

Schedule a reboot of the FlashRouter to restart your connection. A reboot of your network can help with stability and prevent the connection from slowing down over time.

Navigate to Administration > Keep Alive

Schedule a Reboot in FlashRouter DD-WRT Settings
  1. Enable Schedule Reboot.
  2. Select At a Set Time, and select the time of the day and day of the week you wish to schedule your reboot.
  3. Click Apply Settings.

How do I change the DHCP range of my FlashRouter?

TeamFlashRouters · May 30, 2019 ·

Whenever a device joins the FlashRouter network via wired or WiFi connection the DHCP server on the router gives out a local IP address to each device so all these devices can interact on your local network.

Increase the DHCP range to allow more users to automatically be assigned an IP address or decrease the DHCP range to limit the users that are automatically assigned an IP address.

Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup

Change DHCP Range in FlashRouter DD-WRT Settings
  1. Under Network Address Server Settings (DHCP) change the Maximum DHCP Users to your preferred value.
  2. You can edit the Start IP Address to 2 and Maximum DHCP Users to 254 for the most available slots.
  3. Click Apply Settings.

Wireless Guest Network Setup – FlashRouters Privacy App

TeamFlashRouters · Mar 6, 2020 ·

Important Update: DD-WRT Privacy App Discontinued

The FlashRouter Privacy App has been discontinued and is no longer compatible with new versions of DD-WRT firmware. If you are using DD-WRT, you can still set up OpenVPN or WireGuard manually with the latest DD-WRT builds. Our team is available to assist anyone with an active service plan during this transition.

For the easiest and most secure VPN setup experience, we highly recommend our Privacy Hero 2 solution. It’s designed to make home network security simple and comes with exclusive features, including pre-configured VPN and streaming capabilities.

If you need assistance or want to explore Privacy Hero 2, don’t hesitate to reach out!

The FlashRouters Privacy App makes setting up a wireless guest network easier than ever so you can have automatic VPN and ISP connections in your home for any device.

Preparing for Wireless Guest Network Setup

If you have a Dual-band or Tri-Band router you can setup a WiFi Guest Network on any band you like, creating a separate VLAN (virtual local area network) for your visitors, or in order to segment your VPN networks. We recommend using the 2.4GHz network for your DD-WRT Guest Wireless Network so it is compatible with the most possible WiFi devices. Setting up a guest network for visitors in your home allows you to keep them off of your main WiFi network.

We recommend performing this setup while connected to the FlashRouter via ethernet cable. If your computer does not have an ethernet port and you must proceed via wireless connection to the FlashRouter. Be sure to pay attention to the wireless connection as you may need to rejoin the FlashRouter’s network after making changes.

FlashRouters Privacy App Setup for Wireless Guest Network

Access FlashRouters Privacy App

Navigate to Status > MyPage

  1. Click the FlashRouters Privacy App logo and in the dropdown select Simple Setup.

Add the Guest Network

  1. Under the 2.4GHz or 5GHz Interface click the + button.

Enter Wireless Information for Guest Network

  1. Set the WiFi Name (SSID) field to the desired name for your Guest Network.
  2. Set the WiFi Password field to the wireless password required to join your Guest Network.
  3. The DNS Server field is automatically set to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS). You can change this field to any DNS server you desire or leave it as is.

Replicate the steps above to add more than one Guest Network to your FlashRouter.

Apply and Reboot

Click the Apply and Reboot button on the bottom of the page when your desired settings are entered. Be patient as the FlashRouter fully reboots, which can take a few minutes. Keep in mind that if you performed these steps while connected to wireless you may need to rejoin the network.

Bonus feature: Policy Routing by Guest Network

Policy routing by Network allows for you to assign either the main network or the new guest network to bypass the VPN connection and connect directly to ISP. This is a great solution for when streaming websites block the incoming VPN connection.

Additional Bonus Feature: Using SmartDNS on an ISP Guest Network

Once your guest network is set to bypass the VPN connection by following the Policy Routing by Network guide linked above, in the DNS Server field associated with your Guest Network you may add a SmartDNS server of a SmartDNS service you are signed up for to be used specifically on the new Guest Network.

Typically SmartDNS and VPN connections can not be made on a single router however with the FlashRouters Privacy App you can set your Guest Network to bypass the VPN connection making it able to have simultaneous VPN and SmartDNS connections all in one FlashRouter.

  1. Follow the steps above to create a Guest Network
  2. In DNS Server field enter the SmartDNS server provided to you by your SmartDNS provider.
  3. Click Apply and Reboot.
  4. Once the FlashRouter has booted back up access the FlashRouters Privacy App once again and select Options.
  5. Select Networks.
  6. In the Action dropdown for your Guest Network select VPN-Off.
  7. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.
  8. Then follow the steps to register your IP Address in your SmartDNS provider’s account area.

This setup also allows you to create different rules for different WiFi SSID’s in your home ranging from QoS controls, access restrictions, VPN network segmentation, and more.

Preparing for Wireless Guest Network Setup

If you have a Dual-band or Tri-Band router you can setup a WiFi Guest Network, creating a separate VLAN (virtual local area network) for your visitors, or in order to segment your VPN networks on any band you like.

Which DD-WRT wireless extender setup should I be using?

TeamFlashRouters · Jun 11, 2019 ·

FlashRouters supports four unique DD-WRT wireless extender setups – options similar to an open source Mesh network. Each different wireless extender configuration serves a different purpose. Read below to see which guide fits your configuration requirements!

Wireless Repeater

Why should I choose Wireless Repeater Setup?

  1. If you have a MiFi wireless only internet connection or other type of WiFi internet where there is no access to any ethernet port for a wired internet connection, then you can setup a wireless repeater network to both extend WiFi and add wired connection capabilities.
  2. If you have a large home or office area that requires additional WiFi coverage can use a wireless repeater setup to extend the existing network.
  3. If you want to create a separate VPN WiFi network in your home without placing the FlashRouter in the same room as your primary router you can use wireless repeater to establish a WiFi internet connection and then connect to VPN on your WiFi repeater network.
  4. If you want a wireless Dual Router setup option where you can have local ISP IP address through your main router WiFi network and your VPN IP address through your FlashRouter Wireless Repeater WiFi network, both available for you to connect at all times. Each network is on a unique subnet.

View the FlashRouter Wireless Repeater Setup Guide.

Wireless Repeater Bridge

Use Cases

Wireless Repeater Bridge Setup

  1. Anyone that needs all their devices connected to the same local network.
  2. Anyone with a MiFi internet connection that does not have an ethernet port and has no need for VPN.
  3. Anyone with a large wireless area that requires additional coverage.

Wireless Client Bridge

Use Cases

Wireless Client Bridge Setup

  1. Anyone with a MiFi internet connection that needs wired access.
  2. Anyone that needs additional wired ports instead of using a switch.
  3. Anyone with wired only devices in their home that are too far from your main router.

Wireless Access Point DHCP Forwarder

Use Cases

Wireless Access Point DHCP Forwarder Setup

  1. Anyone that needs their devices connected to the same local network and wants lossless LAN to LAN speeds via wireless and ethernet connection.
  2. Anyone that wants to use their main router to provide DHCP to their router instead of having an additional DHCP server.

Wireless Repeater Setup

TeamFlashRouters · Apr 16, 2019 ·

If you need to extend your wireless and wired connection capabilities, you can setup a FlashRouter as a Wireless Repeater. In Wireless Repeater mode the FlashRouter connects to your main router via WiFi and then creates a completely separate network segment for you. This new “repeater” network then transmits your internet signal via FlashRouter LAN ports for wired internet access while also creating a new Wireless Extender network that will expand your wireless network range throughout your home or office just like a mesh network.

Preparing for Wireless Repeater Setup

Verify your wireless information

To connect your FlashRouter wirelessly to your existing wireless network you will need the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and Wireless Password of the existing wireless network that you will repeat. Verify and note this information.

We recommend using a 2.4GHz network to repeat as this network will have more range. Be sure to click Add under the 2.4GHz settings and not the 5GHz settings.
