Your Privacy Hero router includes a subscription that gives you access to features like VPN protection, ad blocking, and streaming tools. But what happens when that subscription expires? Do you need to pay now, can you renew later, and what happens if you cancel?
This guide explains your subscription options in simple terms, including how to save on renewals, avoid unwanted charges, manage any included NordVPN service, and understand which router features remain available without an active subscription.
What service is included with a Privacy Hero router?
Eligible Privacy Hero router purchases include the service term listed on the order, commonly one year of Privacy Premium. Selected bundles also include one or two years of NordVPN service. Privacy Hero and NordVPN may have different service lengths: always check your specific order.
What is the difference between Prepay Now & Save and Renew Later?
Prepay Now & Save: Pay an eligible discounted renewal amount during activation. The extra one-year or two-year Privacy Hero term begins after the service already included with your router.
Renew Later: Do not buy any extra renewal term during activation. Your included Privacy Hero service runs as normal, but a valid payment method is required and automatic renewal may charge at the end of the term unless turned off before the billing date.
Why is a payment method required when service is included?
Privacy Hero is a cloud-managed subscription router. The service supports VPN connection management, ad blocking, DNS filtering, device security controls, streaming features, supported updates, and cloud access. The payment method enables future subscription renewal; providing it does not automatically mean paying for a prepaid plan today. Choosing Renew Later means no prepaid renewal charge at activation.
How much can I save with a prepaid renewal?
The following were the prepaid offers displayed in the November 2026 activation screenshots. Availability and prices can change; the live activation checkout controls the actual amount charged.

When are prepaid discounts available?
Prepaid activation offers are generally available at initial router activation or during special promotional periods. Choosing Renew Later does not reserve those discounts. If you later cancel or reactivate, the original offer may no longer be available, and future renewal can be at the then-current regular price.
Can I turn off automatic renewal and keep my included service?
Yes. Disabling automatic renewal prevents future scheduled renewal charges, while any already-paid or included service generally continues through its expiration date. The amount already charged is not automatically refunded when renewal is turned off.
What if my Privacy Hero service just renewed?
If your subscription was renewed and you want to dispute or request a refund for that renewal, contact FlashRouters promptly, ideally within seven days after renewal, for eligibility review under the terms of the purchase. Cancellation of future renewal and a refund of an already-processed payment are separate requests.
What is Privacy Hero Free Mode?
When there is no active Privacy Hero subscription, the router continues in Free Mode: internet and WiFi only. The cloud-managed VPN, device-level VPN routing, ad blocking, DNS filtering, streaming relocation, backup VPN, ongoing feature updates and other subscription services are unavailable until service is restored.
Is NordVPN service included? What about standalone NordVPN refunds?
Check your router order. Qualifying bundles can include one year or two years of NordVPN, claimed separately after router activation. Do not purchase a duplicate NordVPN subscription just to claim an included code.
A separate standalone NordVPN purchase generally has a strict 30-day refund eligibility window for qualifying new orders; after the eligible refund period the purchased term generally cannot be refunded. Disabling NordVPN automatic renewal is different from obtaining a refund and may still be possible after that period. Router bundle or reseller terms can differ.
Why is there a red VPN indicator after activation?
Privacy Hero normally attempts to connect to its built-in VPN as activation finishes. A red indicator near VPN suggests the VPN connection is not established. If ordinary internet works, regional or ISP restrictions on WireGuard may be involved. Check the VPN connection status and try a supported alternative server, protocol, or third-party VPN option. Can I use another VPN provider after activation?
Yes. Privacy Hero can begin on its built-in VPN and then be configured for supported third-party providers such as NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, IPVanish or PIA. Follow the corresponding Privacy Hero VPN setup guide.
