Set up IPVanish on an ASUS router with AsusWRT VPN Fusion using either WireGuard or OpenVPN. WireGuard uses a downloadable .conf configuration file, while OpenVPN uses an .ovpn server file and IPVanish VPN login credentials.
All configuration takes place in your ASUS router’s administration interface. You will need a working internet connection, an active IPVanish subscription, and an ASUS router with the appropriate VPN Fusion protocol support.
Which IPVanish VPN Type Should You Choose?
1. WireGuard (Recommended)
Generate an IPVanish .conf file for a selected location, then import it into the WireGuard profile type in ASUS VPN Fusion. The file contains the authentication keys and server settings, so no separate OpenVPN username and password is entered in this method.
2. OpenVPN
Download an IPVanish .ovpn file for a server, then import it into the OpenVPN profile type in ASUS VPN Fusion. Enter the IPVanish VPN username and password in the profile’s credentials fields.
Option 1: Download an IPVanish WireGuard Configuration
Use IPVanish’s account-based WireGuard Configuration Generator to download the configuration for the server location you want. This is a file-based setup; ASUS does not need a separate IPVanish app.
- Open the IPVanish account sign-in page and sign in to your active account.
- Find WireGuard in the account navigation, typically under Service Management, to open the WireGuard Configuration Generator.
- Select your preferred available server location and choose Generate.
- Download and save the generated
.conffile to your computer or phone. You will upload this file to ASUS in the next step.

Import the IPVanish WireGuard File into ASUS VPN Fusion
- On the ASUS router, go to VPN > VPN Fusion > Add profile.
- Enter a recognizable Connection Name, such as IPVanish – WireGuard.
- Set VPN Type to WireGuard, select Upload Config, and choose the
.conffile generated by IPVanish. The import area should display Complete when the upload finishes. - Review the imported settings. For specific devices, use the pencil icon next to Device to select which clients use this profile. You can also configure the VPN as the default route for all devices through VPN Fusion, depending on your firmware.
- Click Apply and Enable to save and activate the profile.
- Confirm the WireGuard profile connects, then verify the public IP from a device actually using that profile.

Option 2: Download an IPVanish OpenVPN Configuration
OpenVPN is an alternative when WireGuard is not available on your ASUS router or when testing a different VPN protocol. You will need both an IPVanish server .ovpn file and the credentials accepted for manual IPVanish VPN connections.
- Open the IPVanish OpenVPN configuration file directory.
- Download an
.ovpnfile for your desired location. If available, start with a UDP configuration; use a TCP configuration as a fallback if UDP does not work on your network. - Have your IPVanish VPN username and password ready. These are the credentials accepted by your IPVanish VPN account for manual OpenVPN configuration.
Download the file rather than opening or editing it. If the server directory has changed, find the current manual OpenVPN configuration downloads inside your IPVanish account.
Import the IPVanish OpenVPN File into ASUS VPN Fusion
- In ASUS, open VPN > VPN Fusion > Add profile.
- Set a recognizable Connection Name, such as IPVanish – New York OpenVPN, and choose OpenVPN in the VPN Type dropdown.
- Click Import .ovpn file and select the IPVanish server file downloaded above. Wait until the import reports completion.
- Enter your IPVanish VPN Username and Password. If your IPVanish account presents separate credentials for manual OpenVPN, use those credentials.
- Choose whether to apply this VPN profile to all devices or only selected devices, then select Apply and Enable or the equivalent save/enable controls in your firmware.
- Confirm the profile shows Connected in VPN Fusion and test the public IP on a device assigned to it.

Assign Devices, Verify the Connection, and Troubleshoot
Apply IPVanish to all devices or selected devices
ASUS VPN Fusion can use IPVanish as the default route for the network or assign specific devices to an IPVanish profile while others use a different VPN or normal ISP internet. Supported ASUS models can store multiple VPN profiles, but concurrent connection limits vary.
For Apply to all devices, per-device assignments, ISP bypass, and multiple VPN profiles, follow How to Use ASUS VPN Fusion: Assign Devices and Multiple VPNs. To create separate VPN and ISP WiFi networks, see ASUS Guest WiFi With or Without VPN: Setup Guide.

Check the public IP of the device using IPVanish
- Confirm the intended IPVanish profile shows Connected in ASUS VPN Fusion.
- On a computer, TV, or phone assigned to that profile, visit IPLeak.net or IPVanish IP Address Check.
- Compare the public IP and approximate location with your selected VPN location. A location database may be approximate; confirm that the IP differs from your normal ISP public IP.
- Disconnect any VPN app, iCloud Private Relay, browser VPN/proxy, or device-level filtering that might hide the router’s actual public IP during testing.
If IPVanish does not connect
- Test the ISP connection: Temporarily disable the IPVanish profile and confirm the ASUS router can reach the internet without it.
- WireGuard: Confirm that the profile uses the WireGuard type and that you uploaded a current IPVanish
.conffile. Generate a new file for another available location if needed. - OpenVPN: Verify the VPN username and password, import a new server
.ovpnfile, and try an available TCP configuration if UDP fails. - Routing: Confirm that the test device is actually assigned to an enabled IPVanish profile. Disable other active profiles temporarily to isolate routing conflicts.
- Wrong IP or no internet: See Device Settings That Can Interfere With Your Router VPN.
Still having trouble? Review the General VPN Troubleshooting Guides. If a specific server fails, try a different IPVanish location and recheck the device’s VPN Fusion assignment.
